You don’t seriously think Warrington are a more attractive club to sign for than Saints, do you?

| Warrington on reduced wages can still out strip the larger offers of others. Wire have a far greater chance of reaching finals and the player gets fat bonuses from that, topping up his contract.

I'm sorry RD but, even by your own standards, that is complete and utter b****cks.
Last year we put one over on Saints by beating them at Wembley but Saints got to both major finals, winning the Grand Final, and claiming the League Leaders Shield along the way.
What we can say is that Warrington are now one of the big clubs. We have ambition, we have appeared in both the Challenge Cup and Grand Finals in recent years and we have training facilities which are up there with the very best. From all accounts our player welfare side of the club is also excellent.
Currie is no different to any other employee in an organisation. He may choose to move to another employer for various reasons such as better pay, better promotion prospects (in the case of a RL player substitute that for silverwear), better working conditions etc. He may also want to leave for 'negative' reasons i.e. he doesn't like his boss or the way things are run. Sometimes people just need a change.
If he hasn't fallen out of love with us then we should be a good position to retain him - if we choose to. He's 26 next month, if he hadn't had his injury problems then this contract would have been the biggest of his career. From all accounts we offered him less money, maybe somebody else is willing to take more of a chance.

| James Graham has asked for an immediate release to join a Super League side. Eek. If it's Saints it's got the Rooney to Everton vibe about it. Still a legend but way past his best. If it's not Saints, it's a big shocker. The fiery redhead in a Wire shirt till the end of the season perhaps?

Definitely Saints, makes zero sense for Wire to sign Graham when they have Hill and Cooper who are both in their thirties. Interesting signing for Saints, past his best clearly but I wonder if he’ll have enough in the tank to go well for them. Can count on one hand the number of good props in SL at the moment so he’ll probably still churn out 100+ metres a game.

| Apparently Sandow got £35k final bonuses that was written into his contract to get him something like the £230k per annum he was asking for,....apparently.
After he paid off Leon, he was left with £600...allegedly.
Bought a flight and returned to Aus without anyone knowing...apparently, leaving Bob the kit man knocking on the door of an empty house ahead of taking him to the airport with a ticket already bought by the club for him...apparently.
Other players bonuses were around £5k for the final appearance....apparently!

From what I gather prize money in Super League is something like
CC winner £120k, runner up £55k
GF winner £100k, runner up £50k
LLS £100k
There are no rules as to how much, if any, of that the club have to give to the players or how they distribute it but only prize money is exempt from the salary cap. So you are saying that Sandow had it written into his contract that he would get 11% of the maximum possible prize money (17% of what we actually won)?!!! This tops your statement that Currie would choose to stay with us rather than go to Saints because our prize money will be greater (to save you doing the maths, Saints' money was double that of ours last season).

| The Salary cap interpretation of prize money isn`t limited to appearing in finals or winning trophies.
It also applies to home games Man of the Match prize money, that is awarded by the Match Sponser for that game!!!!!!.......................

Can the club, any club, also apply prize money for teams or individuals doing well in a particular game or having a good season that doesn't show up on the salary cap ? For argument's sake, a player on a grand a week could get 2 grand a week with agreed bonuses but still show £1k against his salary cap?

I stand to be corrected but my interpretation of the rules (section 5.7) is that only prize money centrally controlled by the League can be included (competition winnings, Man of Steel etc). This would be sensible otherwise you have an instant loophole.

Looking back it wasn'y you who mentioned Saints. Your statement was that Currie would have more chance of achieving greater prize money that at another club and based on last season, with the exception of Saints, this would have been true - so my appologies.
The fact remains that the days of 'work-arounds' such as agreed prize money, win bonuses, employing a player's spouse, defferred payments, image rights etc are all long gone.

Hey no need to apologise to me friend. You’ve done me no wrong. I can’t prove that Sandow’s £230k ish demand was met by way of part bonus top up promise, but it makes sense. If you think about it why offer him £230k done and then pay him bonuses on top when that then becomes far in excess of what he’d had currently been on in the NRL?
It was a player that revealed the amount he received as a bonus and what he was left with after paying off a debt(ahem).
As with Currie, he will know how much a club will have to stump up to out do his contract offer with the likelihood of bonuses before excepting.

Bit of a grey area that one, it mentions Man of The Match monies can be excluded along with Man of Steel or other individual awards, but I think this only relates to official Man of The Match awards for the Challenge Cup Final & Grand Final and Official End of Season Super League awards.
I know Salford were punished a few years back for giving Niall Evalds a bonus of a Maserati car for being awarded 'Player of the Year'. As it wasn't an 'Official' Super League award Salford were charged with breaking the cap for this and a few other things in 2016.
I can't see how Man of The match awards awarded by the club can be excluded from a players salary, it's too open to misuse for both the value of awards being given and who the award is given to.
International appearances are excluded from the cap (to a max of £5k per game) and any expenses relating to the education of a player can also be excluded.
If you want a fun read the rules are in the link below.

The league catches up with these kind of work-arounds easily and just updates the rules to remove them. The real danger with the salary cap is when unscrupulous officials at a club think they have discovered an ingenious way to deliberately break the rules in a way that can't be detected. Sometimes they can get away with it for a while, until it all comes to light and years of cheating becomes exposed, at huge cost to the club and fans who did nothing wrong...Canterbury Bulldogs....Melbourne Storm....Saracens....
