| I don't want to talk for the OP but I think the wording is very specific in this question.
A lot of people are talking about the pros and cons of each player on the wing.
I think we are all in agreement that charnley is either marginally or vastly better than riley on the wing (depending on whetjer you are a wire or a pie) but we must remember that riley is a more well rounded player than charnley and covers more varied positions and has better defense.
I feel the question addresses the issue of having a more prolific try scorer in the short term over a more well rounded player. Having a solely attacking orientated winger over more reliable winger.
It is a good question and I would love the question to be asked again in, say, 3 seasons. The roles will be more defined and Riley wilable to knuckle down after the tragedy in his life from over a year ago. We will be able to look back at this thread and judge. I have no doubt it will not be a winger's comparison.

| Rileys future is on the wing now that we have Ratchford and he is more reliable than Charnley
Riley will score about the same number of tries maybe couple less than Charnley but his defensive ability will help his team rather than being at fault for a large amount of tries because of poor defence

| There is no doubt riley is a bit more reliable and less prone to a mistake. But wingers should have a bit of 'X factor' about them and be able to win a game from nothing. I'm going for Charnley(only just) because he is more of a matchwinner.

| I went for Riley, as the question was who would you have in your team. I would agree that Charnley has a bit extra going forward, but if you look at our threequarters, we have the flair, eighty yard players in the centre, with solid, excellent finishers outside them. We have the balance at the moment, and that's what it's about. So for Warrington I would say Riley is the better choice.

| I believe the only advantage Charnley has over Riley is his size. Charnley tends to break tackles on his way past, as oppose to Riley who slips his way through and is off balance by that point resulting in him being pulled down. Aside from that, both finish well, both have a good step, Riley possibly has the edge in defence though.

| pointless, wigan say charney and wire say riley. i bet my house that charney will get a shot at the england team than riley even if riley is top try scorer at the end beating charnley.
this is all because charney is a flair player like tomkins, everyone oves him as he score great tries which make them not much notice the defensive frailties.
remember wire vs wigan at hj we ripped his wing apart, for englands sake i hope charnley can work on his defence and become one of the best wingers in the world, but atm there is a lot of work to do for riley and charnley.

Ironically, Riley was 20th in tackle busts in SL in 2010 and Charnley was 20th in 2011 when Riley didn't play as much. So far this season, Riley is 3rd in SL and Charnley 17th.

| well funnily enough seb i was musing at the game yesterday, theres been the talk in pre season about king's departure and several players ,chris and the two rhys' getting various chances to replace him.
Would we not say that Riley should really be the one, we've seen what a devastating partnership him and atkins have, theres a good understanding between the pair of them.
Why not just go with that instead of starting something from scratch.

Perception eh. Yet this season Charnley has made more clean breaks (5) than Riley (1) which is opposite to WireWireWire's thoughts.

| Riley for me but it's close. Charnley is a better attacker and can pull something out of the bag from his own half but Riley seems a better all round player. Add to that he seems to have an excellent attitude and it tips it his way for me.

charnley definitely has a point to prove in defence, but last year id say, as i think would most wigan fans, that charnley was vulnerable due to deacon and joel tomkins failures in defence more than his own.

Stats are all well and good but as the margin meter shows they don't show the bigger picture, the real time human factor. You could have 5 breaks to pap Bradford side or 1 to a good Huddersfield.
This year i have my bum wiping average down to 4 wipes from my 2011 average of 5 but this still doesn't beat my average of 2 when i was a teenager. Stats just like this one, can just be a load of sh*t.
