You're both absolutely right. Prior to Fieldhouse in the late 60's there was Kenny Parr, who was a superb ball playing second row who made Barrry Briggs and Ray Clark look world beaters with his superb passes. He was years ahead of his time, but some absolutely hated him as a player.
Wedge was a fine player and would have really shone in a good side. I'd completely forgotten about Mark Thomas.

The problem with Mark Thomas was that we picked him up from Leigh, when he couldn't even get a regular game there - He was very much a panic buy (I'm sure we signed him to play in the Maine Road semi with Wigan?) and for most of his Wire career he seemed to flit in and out of the side, never really setting the world alight, except for the two big games he played in (the Central Park semi and the Regal final).

He certainly wasn't a bad player, but neither was he the ball playing genius that some might like to remember, through rose-tinted memories of the past.

Oh my word, Steve and Barry Peters. They didn't even look like rugby players. Probably because they evidently weren't.

Mike Wainwright would look great in the current Warrington side with his passing and offloading game. People forget he was a strong defender as well.

A frustrating one more recently was Jon Wilshire. He could play, had a decent bit of gas and was good in the air. But just didn't perform. Apparently he was carrying knocks, but his whole attitude looked off. The way he carried the ball back, he made Dean Gaskell look like Dean Bell!

As someone has mentioned, still can't believe we signed Paul Hulme. And paid him wages.

i know the stigma attached for the hulme bros (david was an utter scumbag playing for salford) Paul was pretty good for us in SL1, him and Cull as a back row pairing went pretty well.

I always thought Wedge's problem was that when he got over that foot injury, the team was going through major problems, and one of those that affected him more than anything was that he WASN'T Paul Sculthorpe, who had since departed.

That's horrendous, compare it against the St. Helens and Bradford teams that competed in that years grand final and it's frightening!

Strange, but if you look at the team which lost 0-80 at St Helens in 1996 there are some decent players in the line up:

Warrington: Penny; Forster, Rudd (Finau, 9), Currier, Thompson; Harris, Ford; Jones (Chambers, 27), Hough, Hilton (Jones, 67), Cullen, Bennett, Knott.

Can't believe how terrible he was for us, became such a great player at Melbourne later on.

He proper stole a wage from us! I remember watching him in the Nrl and thinking this can't be the same person!

Kidwell claimed that he couldn't play in the mud and cold weather.

Yes he did. Typical of most of the players in that side: capable of one flash of genius per season.

That was an awful season, some good performers if you will in that side though, Hilton, Clarke, Burns and Marquet were not bad players by any stretch, Marquet was top tackler of the season IIRC, so he got through some graft. Domic i class as a Wire legend



I've just been wracking my brains, i've not cheated, i'm guessing our interchange players for that game would have been... Gleeson, Fozzard, P Wood, and Guisset? Or maybe Noone?

Can add Smyth into that too, contributed well in P&B and I'll never forget 'that' try against Bradford!
