Fella, just look at some of the managers that have managed Real Madrid over the past 10 years. If you didn't know, Real Madrid are the biggest football club in the world, probably the biggest sports club, but they've appointed their fair share of 'nobodies'.
Just because 'Madge' has got a big job, doesn't mean he's massive over there. He could turn up and flop massively and fall into obscurity, or he could be a hit, but, at present, I don't think any coach that is coaching in SL will be massive in Aus, even if he is coaching the biggest and bestest RL side ever.

| One indirect comparison (from another sport) you could equate Wigan's tactics to (under Fadge), would be cricket's 'infamous' Bodyline series, where the ball was deliberately pitched short in order to inflict harm to the batsman. Hostile/intimidatory bowling had obviously taken place before, but these events were a watershed in the game.
I hate to think that chicken-winging and thirdmaninthetackle, will become commonplace in our game, over here. They've been imported by two Australian coaches who see nothing wrong in them....I for one, do.
Every club has a history of 'dirty' players, and that's what they were...dirty, but you knew what you got with them. This is very much 'cloak and dagger'
Yes, Fadge has been successful. Good luck to him. If he can sleep at nights, knowing his team use 5h1thouse tactics, then so be it. When he goes, I'll breathe a sigh of relief for our game, as I think there's no need for such tactics, that he and Brown(sorry Hudds fans, but he's just as bad) brought over to our shores. Noble, a very honourable man, who's sides were ALWAYS extremely physical, never stooped so low, as to use such methods when he was in charge at Wigan.
As other posters have said....it's win at all costs.
Melbourne's pots have been discredited, down under, for clear rule breaking
Wigan's wont be, but they'll have a tinge of 'ill gotten gains' about them

Clearly you've done your research to try and support your claim about your outgoing coach.
My question is, why do you care where he is going? Why do you care about the status of the club he is going to ?
He arrived, was very successful in turning a mid table team into the champions and now he is leaving. I'd be more concerned about why he is leaving the 'Biggest Club in RL', than the history of the 'Crap at the moment' team he is going to.

So. His appointment was a big story in RL back in April. He may not have been widely known at that time outside RL circles - in which he has been highly rated for some time (otherwise it's doubtful whether he could have gone straight from Wigan to a big NRL club even after the success he had last year, they just don't rate SL, and who can blame them).
But to say that he isn't a big name now is just ridiculous. The article you have cited (rather unhelpfully for a lot of the other Wire fans on this thread, I doubt they'll thank you for it ) describes Souths as "one of the world's most famous rugby league clubs".
There has been a lot of press interest around his signing (because of the status of Souths, Madge's track record and the esteem he is held in by people like Bellamy as quoted in the article) because its one of the big NRL clubs, with perhaps the highest profile due to its history, fan base and ownership.
To say that their new coach isn't a big name is ridiculous. The obvious analogy would be Villas-Boas (not quite the same because he hasn't been a figure known in English football, whereas Madge was assistant coach at a leading NRL side). Would you say that he wasn't a big name in English football the moment his appointment was announced? Bizarre.
Not sure where you guys are going with this anti-Madge campaign. You've just won the LLS after a great league campaign and you are very well poised going into the play-offs. Why you're all taking time out to bash Madge in such ridiculous terms (Bodyline? Don Revie? "Despised" His achievements tainted etc etc) is beyond me. It is funny though!

Because you're a RL fan?
Sadly many fans in this country are just fans of their own club rather than being RL fans who support a particular club.
Wigan fans have their faults - pessimism, arrogance and a hint of paranoia (though everybody does hate us ) but one thing most of us can't be accused of is not thinking about the wider game. (There are many other good things about Wigan fans but I won't upset you by listing them). The best example of this would be that when the SC was brought in most Wigan fans (myself included) at the time were supportive because we thought (wrongly) that it would really benefit the game as a whole, even though it was likely not to help Wigan in the short/medium term.
The other reason you should care is that if you are expressing a view on someone else's opinions it is best to have some knowledge of the subject.

...and the status of Souths in Oz is exactly what.
They are a club who haven't achieved anything of note in decades.
Do we now start bigging-up Huddersfield's next coach, simply because they've had a successful history, and the game originated there.
and WOW, they've got an actor as an owner, we truly aren't worthy to be in the company of such greatness.
You're just trying to pour 'over-exagerated' praise on a coach, who was third tier, at his previous Oz club.
Dear oh dear, you're getting desperate.
If you want to carry on, 'burying your head in the sand', plainly ignoring the underhand tactics Fadge has brought to your club, then fine.
Fadge has been a big name (in ENGLISH Rugby League circles) for what, 18 months. When he goes back to Oz, he'll (probably) become yet another coach. Replaced at Souths in a couple of season's time, when the 'emperor's new clothes' coach hasn't acheived his goals. I only hope South's fans can put up with his 'brand' of rugby.

Villas-Boas had achieved more than enough during his career to make himself known. He won the treble with Porto in his first full year of management, he'd worked with Jose Mourinho at both Inter and Chelsea, and he was widely regarded as one of, if not the best young coach in the world. Thing is, he wasn't a 'big name' because he hadn't achieved anything in a big league. Just like Madge, he's achieved things with Wigan and he's managed to get a big job back home, but until he's winning trophies with Souths and establishing himself as one of the NRL's best coaches, how can he be deemed big news?
Fact is, he's got the job on the belief he'll be a top coach, but to say he's well-respected and a big name, when his only achievement in Aus has been as a what, number 3? It's a little farfetched.
Point is, and you'll see this across many sports; just because you've got the big job, doesn't make you a big name. And just because you achieved things as a number 2 or number 3, doesn't mean you're instantly a well-respected number 1, nor does it instantly make you a 'big name'.

Deano, you really don't have a clue, do you? When the SC was brought in Wigan fans were not at all happy about it, despite the fact that the club had almost made themselves bankrupt because of the salaries they were paying. Did you know that for the first few years of the SC Wigan were actually given a speial dispensation because of the excessive long term contracts they were tied in to? They later went on to break the cap on two occasions and I don't seem to remember too many Wigan fans saying that the RFL were right to punish them.
I find that most Wigan fans are very knowledgable about RL and have had some good debate with them in the past. Unfortunately there are also a few. like yourself, who cannot see past a cherry and white flag and think that anyone who is associated with Wigan is instantly the best there is. You will not allow others to have an opinion, and will simply ridicule that opinion. You have also described Wire fans as a whole as 'the stupidest in RL.' I think that you have proved yourself wrong.

| I understand why Wigan fans hold Madge in high regard. He took pretty much the same team that Noble had an turned them into champions in his first season. In his second season he's won the Challenge cup and still has a good chance of retaining their Super League crown.
But at the end of the day he quit at the first job opportunity that came his way from Australia and got out of the final year of his contract. Come mid October he won't be giving a second thought to Wigan in any way.

| More comedy gold:
1. Wigan fans think anyone associated with the club is the best there is (step forward Dennis Moran, world class half-back....apparently )
2. Villas-Boas did not become a big name in British football the moment he signed as coach for Chelsea.
3. Souths are not "arguably the most famous and historic club in Australian RL".
4. In fact, Souths are like Swinton
I did not (I think) say that Warrington had the stupidest fans in RL. If I did, I apologise. I have no way of knowing whether they are. What I think I said was that Wire fans appear to be on a campaign to try to prove themselves the stupidest fans in RL. Sadly this thread is yet more evidence of that, though I'm coming to the conclusion that many of you don't actually believe most of the ridiculous things you post. (The Swinton/South comparison can't have been serious, surely? I don't recall 80,000 protesters marching on Salford Town Hall at any point...). But whether it's deliberate or not, its comedy gold, so thank you.

| Quote ="Deano G"More comedy gold:
1. Wigan fans think anyone associated with the club is the best there is (step forward Dennis Moran, world class half-back....apparently
)

80,000 eh?
