| Quote ="Oxford Exile"IMO a good, solid signing....well done Wires!
He's always looked dangerous with ball in hand whenever we have played him in the past. His recruitment strengthens our back division and adds some much needed pace.'"
His pace is the greatest positive that this signing will bring.
Our lack of it as been the standout factor so far this season and it provides a significant mental advantage to an opposition when it knows it's unlikely to be hit with a counter attack when attacking themselves - it's the equivalent of the boxer fighting the opponent who he knows can't ko him. He can attack with more confidence knowing he's not going to be picked off. Particularly against higher level opposition this is crucial.
I'd like to think that as Roberts settles, then a right hand attack of Charnley, BMM and Roberts could be pretty lethal?

| Quote ="Asgardian13"Why would signing a ( much needed ) winger be influenced by the future of one of our half-backs?
Ratchford has been tried and failed as a stand-off. He clearly is more comfortable chiming into the attack from full back from time-to-time rather than carrying the pressure of being a main pivot and playmaker for 80 minutes.
Brown is cover for our wingers and could make a good case for being slected ahead of Lineham. He can also cover fullback and with Jack Johnson out for the season then the only way I can see Russel make the starting line-up is as cover for Ratch should he suffer an injury.'"
You didnt quote the rest of my post, which said if Roberts stays, it will be interesting to see who makes way for Charnley. I was just putting it out there.....Mitch Brown has looked the best out of all personnel that have played wing this season up to now IMO.
I am not a sure if it would work with Ratch at HB. But to be fair to him, we probably looked the best we have going forward in that last 15mins against Hull when he was playing in the halves.
As i said in my previous post, when Charnley is ready to go, it will be interesting to see who makes way and if it is a straight swap, or if there will be positional changes.......
Either way...great signing. We havent had proper decent pace in a long time (Penny aside).....

I think Russell is feeling the days are over too. Probably seen the last of him in PnB if we can offload him

Mitch Brown will obviously miss out. Unlucky on him but Lineham and Charnley are far better.
It'll be: Lineham, Atkins, Goodwin, Charnley.
Hopefully Charnley will be playing outside Goodwin, if it Atkins we may as well not have signed him.

| I still can't workout how Ratchford has been ousted as a failed halfback.
The spell he played at 6 was easily the best hb display I'd seen at Warrington this season...and by some length.

I agree that he played well in that short spell against Hull, however I'm not convinced we could get away playing in such a off-the-cuff way, as he did on that night, on a regular basis.
I'd actually love to see a more unregimented type of half back, harking back to the Phil Blake style player of yesteryear, but unfortunately I think those days are long gone.

| Ratch has been our best player bar Clark this season. It would be silly to chop.and change and mess with it.
Swap a winger for a winger. Charnley for Mitch Brown. Simple as that.

| What Charnley's signing could give us is the chance to change the backs about during games by such as having M.Brown on the bench & fetching him on to move Ratch to the halves or even loose forward to give a different combination during games.

Wingers in Union aren’t involved in the game a great deal and they do not have to get back 10m in the defensive line every tackle. There’s a hell of a lot of standing around doing nothing for outside backs in Union. I think he’ll be doing a fair bit of extra to get up to the fitness required to play Rugby League again

I don't think you need to worry. We won't lose any games due to the lack of fitness of one of our wingers.

| In 18 months we have exchanged Ormsby, Evans, Penny, Blyth for Charnley, Goodwin, Hiku*, and M. Brown.
Much more like the quality we need.
*We tried.

We tend to just acquire the English talent from other teams now.
Hill(2016 form), Clark, Currie, Ratchford, Lineham, Charnley, Luis Johnson etc. Like kids in a sweet shop.

| There needs to be a bit of patience when it comes to Charnley. He’s not played RL in a while and potentially his confidence could be shot to pieces. There are plenty of unfortunate reasons why his Union career hasn’t worked out so it depends on how you want to spin it. Essentially he’s gone from 5th choice England RL winger to 5th choice winger in a mid table Union team. As well as that he’s seen Solomona, who is now very likely to be starting for England during their summer tour to South Africa.
I suspect he’ll be fine, and all in he’s done pretty well for Sale, and can come back to League with his head held high.
Think his preference will be right wing, so he’ll be on Atkins side, with Lineham on the other wing. I think that was the case at Wigan.

| He looks confident enough to be fine. He’s got nothing to prove on the wing for Warrington as he’s not got big boots to fill. He’s got elusive pace and a decent step so on the odd occasion he gets the ball in an attacking position (once every few games) he should be okay.

| All in the half backs. If we can put Atkins in space (remember those days) then Charnley will be fine. Riley scored a bucket load.

This is precisely the point abolut Ratchford. He enjoys the freedom to step into the action, and a short spell works for him. He was given numerous outings as first choice starting 6 especially in 2014/15 and looked hopeless.
