| Quote ="worthing wire"Which two English clubs turned down Eric Cantona before he went to Leeds Utd? Who were their managers, and what were their reasons?'"
Pretty sure one of them was Liverpool, under Souness. Not sure of the reasons, he probably felt the money would be better spent on Istvan Kosma, Paul Stewart or Mark Walters, he'd be right. Prior to landing in the UK, Cantona did have somewhat of a reputation as a badboy but I don't know the reason.
The other, I think was Sheffield Wednesday under Trevor Francis ? Pretty certain that they wanted him to have a trial before a contract was offered where as Leeds offered him a contract.

| Possibly an urban myth, but the reason I've heard that Francis didn't sign Cantona was because Eric was only able to do a bit of an indoor five-a-side kickabout since it was all a bit frozen and cold outside

| Another Graham Souness fact: remember Michael Knighton the fella that did the ball juggling on the pitch at Old Trafford and was going to buy the club in 1989, but his backers pulled out and it turned out he didn't have the cash.....Knighton had Souness lined up to come in as manager as soon as the deal was complete. United were about 13th in the table and Ferguson was under pressure. Souness was seen as hot management property at the time, because he'd won Rangers the title for the first time in 10 years (!)

Sounds like an urban myth to me. Kinkladze maybe, but not Cantona.

Jesus.
Clearly, his time at Liverpool was a bad one, pretty much every signing he made was questionable, some of them like Dicks were just awful. What I did like about him was that he gave youth a chance, the likes of Fowler & McManaman really came through under him, and Carragher too I think to a lesser extent also.

| Souness gets judged a bit unfairly I think. There were signs of decline in the Liverpool team before he took over, Dalglish had let some players go on too long possibly because of loyalty to the guys who had been through Hillsborough with him going to all the funerals etc. The players he signed though, were not really "Liverpool" signings for that era, Paul Stewart, Michael Thomas, Mark Wright, Dean Saunders, they were good steady players suited to good steady clubs not top teams. From what I remember Souness was quite popular in the early days then after he had his heart bypass op he gave a big interview in the Sun which alienated the Liverpool fans and from that point onwards a critical eye was used.
Suppose it would the equivalent of Fergie leaving Old Trafford now and an old United stalwart like Bruce or Hughes coming in and replacing the old guard of Giggs, Ferdinand, Neville, Scholes with players like Downing, Upson, Konchesky and Kevin Nolan.

£20m odd at the time, wasn't it?
Bizarre.

Who was the first RL player to win both the LanceTodd and Harry Sunderland Trophies?
Sunderland did it in 1979, Villa in 1981. What was it and who did it in 1980?
