| Quote ="WersYourMylerGone"20,000 is far to big for salford they average around 4000 at home? Similar to our move they will get more fans and will eventually get over the 10,000 mark probably but that would be at best and could take a while so they would still have a half empty stadium. That aint going to look very good on tv or be good for atmosphere they should of made it around 13,000 and have space to expand like our ground.'"
First phase for the ground is 12,000 then they will take it from there, for a second phase and third phase of expending it up to 20,000 in the end, I think we'll keep it at 12,000 for some time though.

| Quote ="sally cinnamon"When Salford show ambition you get people on here saying why they shouldn't move into a new stadium, there's no point etc. If they decide to not build their new stadium and stay at the Willows then you'll get threads on here next year after they play Harlequins at home talking about the attendance, saying it's a disgrace, Salford shouldn't be in Super League and neither should Harlequins, they have no fans, Weaste is full of scallies and so on. And yet when I say Super League should be a 10 team competition (which Tony Smith seemed to also be advocating) then everyone says no we need more teams in SL not fewer!
If we want Super League to expand the only way forwards is for the weak links in Super League to improve. We can hardly claim that Warrington were anything special when we started talking about our new stadium in 1998. At that time we were usually near the bottom of the table like Salford are now and yes we might have had one good season when Jonathan Davies was with us four years earlier, but that was hardly a case for us being a big and successful club.....Salford had one good season a few years ago when they had Andrew Dunemann. The worrying thing for us when we started talking about a new stadium was that even when we were on top of the league for much of the 1993/94 season, our crowds were around the 5000 mark, so it was a hard sell for Peter Deakin to try and convince people (and sponsors) that we would have five figure crowds in the new stadium....
Salford for all its negative image, is a city which does have a future, the area around Salford Quays is top notch and the BBC is moving its media city there so it is a place which will get wealthy young professionals moving to it. At the moment we are in a difficult economic time but next time we enter a period of growth, Salford will be one of the parts of the north which grows quickly as investment moves in. A lot of northern cities face a grim future, sadly some of these are RL places like Bradford, which has no apparent potential but Salford does. So you can't blame Salford RL for trying to put something credible up there to at least try to capitalise on it, if they sat in the Willows with the image of flat cap pipe smokers in the Shed, they would never grow and just slowly sink down to the lower leagues like Swinton.
Their signings for next year look decent, Matty Smith looked quality against us last week and Saints are probably regretting letting him leave. Paleaaesina, Bailey and Vinnie Anderson are all first choice players in top teams this year. They aren't signing high profile big names on the whole they are getting understated consistent players eg Wild and Nero. Luke Patten was similar standard to Brett Hodgson in the NRL and is coming over at the same age Hodgson did, Hodgson ended up MoS. They aren't going to sign Lee Briers because it would leave us short of a halfback so unless we have a major coup about to be announced, and Briers is leaving to clear the way, that one can be written off.'"
Sally, what a good and well balanced post. Judgeing by some of the posts there are a few on here that don't have memories, or more than likely weren't around when you were neighbours of ours at the bottom end of the table.
As a Salford fan for too many years I am looking forward to next year already. On paper, we have the strongest squad we have had for years with a mixture of youth and experience. I too am hoping we can kick on from the new stadium like yourselves and Hull.
I personally don't want Lee Briers at Salford. He's certainly a fine player but we have enough cover in the halves.
All the best for tonight.

| This is the same paper which reported earlier in the week that Ian Millward was going to Salford as assistand coach, only for Millward to issue a statement the next day saying it was the first he had heard and that he was going nowhere!

Rumors that he did put in for the job, didn't make the short list so he said he didn't apply to get the Leigh fans back on his side. Seriously though, doubt we're getting Bries, hes to much of an important player for you and we've already got Smith and Holdsworth and Ratchford and Sneyd for cover.

Sally, while I always enjoy and respect your opinions, I feel your admittedly limited knowledge of Wire history is exposed here.
Certainly in the 35 years that I have followed Wire, Salford have never been anything similar to us, barring those dodgy couple of seasons at the beginning of this century.....From the late 70's onwards they have been a yo-yo club, similar to how Oldham were, indeed most older fans of the British game might consider Oldham the better of the 'Manchester' clubs, especially in the 80's.
Salford's support as always been a sticking point....Like I said earlier, the area certainly lacks a Rugby League 'feel' and I really can't go along with your assumption that they will entice some yuppie types in to their new stadium.
For the sake of the game as a whole, I hope they do well, but while they will improve on and off the pitch, I feel ultimately that they will be another Huddersfield, with a nice ground but little solid support.

| Salford have won the RL Championship more times than Warrington, I'm afraid to say.
Most recently, twice in the mid-1970s. Which is two decades more recently than we last won it.

Yes, but since the Watkins/ Fielding inspired days of then, they have produced little.....Certainly from that era onwards, they have been a club on a downward spiral, certainly in the north west area, they have lagged a long way behind, Wire, Wigan, Saints & Widnes.
I applaud their desire to bring back the glory days and to attempt to stimulate an uninspired local public, but I had to correct Sally, who seems to believe that Wire have been in the doldrums since the Brian Bevan era.

Not sure what you mean, I was talking about the position we were in when we started looking at our new stadium. We were at a low point in our history and had had depressed crowds for a long time, even in the 1980s when we had some success, we had low average attendances with good gates against Wigan and Saints at home and very low crowds for the rest. When you are trying to attract fans, they are not going to care about the clubs history and what it did twenty or thirty years ago. Salford now are not in much of a different situation to where we were in 1998/99 and we had the same sceptics telling us it will never work. Not saying it will be easy but if they get a good stadium, and manage to bring some sponsorship on board, they will be able to bring better players in and become a more credible side to appeal to new supporters.

| Personally, I'm pleased for Salford and can't wait to watch a game in their new ground. For whatever reason (there are worse grounds) I just cannot stand The Willows. It's up there with Belle Vue in my most hated ground stakes, but is no worse in reality than Cas or St Helens, or Hull KR.
20,000 sounds excessive capacity wise but I cannot understand the constant kicking of Salford in their attempts to increase support and general appearance of their club. Perhaps it's folk worrying that soon our stadium won't look so "Sexy" by comparison. People don't half have short memories. Wilderspool was a sess pit.
We should all be looking forward to the time when every ground we go to will be either new or vastly improved. (Hopefully) In 2/3 years time we might see the following
Wigan - 5* Stadia - 10k +
St Helens - 5* Stadia - 10k +
Warrington - 4* Stadia - 10k +-
Leeds - 4* Stadia - 10k+
Hull FC - 5* Stadia - 10k +
Huddersfield - 5* Stadia - 8k+
Hull KR - 2/3* Stadia - 7k+ (more with planned stadium improvements)
Crusaders - 3* Stadia - 5k+
Castleford - 4/5* Stadia - 8k+
Bradford - 2/3* Stadia - 8k+
Salford - 4/5* Stadia - 8k+
Widnes - 4* Stadia - 7k+
Quins - 4* Stadia - 4k+
Catalan D - 3* Stadia - 7k+
Average around 8k per game. Some of these might be wishful thinking but not out of the realms of possibility.
