| I am as made up as anyone that wigan have lost, but can we tone down the celebrations a little? Widnes, no matter how cack they have been recently, are our true rivals and you should never celebrate one of their victories with such gusto. Even against that shower.

I'd rather laugh at our nearest rivals than worry about the unwriteen law we have to hate Widnes. I pity Widnes and want to beat them stupid but it isn't a grudge match or anything.

| Oh, it's a grudge match alright. I know you're a young student, but if you ask one of the older fans about games in the 80s they will tell you all you need to know. Games against widnes back then (when they were actually good!) were more intense than any wire/wigan game i've ever been to.

I remember 2009 being intense.
I struggle to remember the last time I though of Widnes as anything other than not a threat. Maybe it's passed Wire by.
I'd love to have a rivalry on the level as Sts/ Wigan or, to a lesser extent, Leeds/ Bradford but that is many moons away.
We're the ebst team in super league and Widnes are the worst.

| As somone of a certain vintage (early 40's), here's my take
The Wids
A big (huge to some) rivalry, that's not existed (properly) since the announcement of the Super League mergers. The Wids have been embarrasing, ever sine (apart from over-acheiving in 2002)
Stains
Come on, as someone of my era, this was never REALLY a rivalry, until the heroic defeats/70-2 thrashing era started, and it became a 'millstone round our neck" since the advent of SL. Let's be fair, the Stains rivalry was the equivalent of our relationship with Leigh, throughout the eighties and most of the nineties. Don't forget, we played Leigh on "glamour" days....Boxing Day, Easter Monday etc, in years gone by.
To me, Wigan is the be all and end all for rivalry, even though, when I started watching Wire, Wigan were poo, and were just about to be relegated. But, it was all about the "mystique"...walking down Bridge St and over Wilderspool Bridge, and seeing THAT graffiti "KILL WIGAN"....and I just thought WOW, there's local rivalry for you.
It always made me nod my head, when Cull was our coach, and we'd be playing Wigan on a live Sky game, and he'd say, in the video interviews (pre-match)..."it's Wigan week"....as a Wire fan, it's always sent a shiver down my spine.
I know the Pies see Stains as their main rivals, and they regard us as an inconvenience, BUT, #### em. Those times when Wigan were in their POMP, and lorded it over everyone (mid 80's to mid 90's), and we'd go to Central Park, and beat them regularly, are my favourite moments as a Wire fan.....long my that continue.

As someone half your age, I agree with this.
I think you could add that we have had better, more meaningful games with Wigan in the near past.
We never faced St Helens in the CC wins. We lost to them when we ran out of steam in 2010 play off game.
Wigan is my favourite away day ~(by some distance)
Widnes 2009 CC game
Both last year's games were great (once to show them we were gonna win the LL sheild and once to seal the deal)
Wigan have this history and, unlike saints, we beat them.

| Whilst I despies Wigan, I've got to agree with Mo I really can't be doing with Widnes at all. It is an age thing and in my formative years they were the team to beat and our local rivals. The memories of squawking, peroxide haired, black and white home knitted triuser suit grannies is enough to still send a shiver down my spine. The most one eyed bunch of speccies IMO during their hey day and may it be a long, long time coming back

Spot on Lefty. Steve Hesford cuffing Greame West round the head just for standing in his way after a convertion, Mark Roberts playing out of position at centre and knocking seven bells out of Kevin Iro, Bish dropping five goals to the loudest chorus of boos you'll hear anywhere. Even Basil Richards (one and only) match winning try. Games v Wigan dominate my match memories as I'm sure they do for a lot of Wire fans.

| You must remember 1988 LG. We had a decent side back then and in 87 had lost in 3(i think) finals to a wigan side that were about to start their dominance. However, widnes were the champs then so all 3 of us had good sides. First round of the premiership and we are at Wigan away. Came away with a great win, top atmosphere at the game too. Next round we go to Widnes in what was one of the maddest days ever. The atmosphere was 10 times more intense and hostile than the wigan game. I was only about 14 and don't mind admitting i was t1ng myself. Players brawling (with fans at one point!), fans having running battles with each other, fans spitting on players as they walked out of the tunnel. Police on horseback after the game. It made the Hull derby look like a tea party. If you don't call that a grudge match then i don't know what the hell is. Just because they have been in the doldrums of late it doesn't take away the history of the fixture. Man city are currently utd's big rivals for the title and the utd/city game will be the biggest game of the season because it will probably decide the league. But utd's biggest hatred will always be for liverpool no matter how mediocre they become.

| It was a cheap shot but I couldnt resist it GHF.
Moe is blob on IMO about Widnes and history and whilst I don't advocate violence in anyway that intense atmosphere is something to be savoured and I hope it returns for the Widnes game...we can't treat this game as a walk over/easy run out

I remember the incident well, Moe. The speccie abuse was against Dessie.....how foolish
There was a scuffle involving about 10 players, right on the touchline, and it went right to the perimeter wall, which was quite low to pitch level. The Wid muppet called Dessie a "black so'n'so" to which Dessie gave him a damned good thrashing.
Dessie was in the GB squad at the time, and was immediately dropped. The case went to court, Dessie pleaded self defence (or something like mitigating circumstances) and was found not guilty. The RFL offered Dessie a snivveling apology, to which Dessie told them which orifice they could put it in.
IIRC the speccie's name was Horrobin....which sums up Widnes precisely, in one word.
Yes, the Wid games WERE a grudge match, but I don't see that intensity returning until the Wids establish themselves in SL for a good few years. At the moment, I don't see that happening

I was at the game and remember that incident. The ball went out of play , a ballboy picked up the ball, Dessie grabbed the ball and pushed the ballboy (don't know if this was intentional), the Widnes speccy was the ballboys dad and went up to Drummond wagging his finger, what was said I obviously don't know, but I do know Drummond hit him and he went down like a sack of e. His name was Horabin and his twin sons were ballboys at Widnes for a few years. I didn't know that it went to court.
Wasn't that the game when hundreds of fans of both sides were fighting on the pitch at half time and it made the national news?
From a Widnes point of view although you were usually also rans when we were good the rivalry between the fans was always more intense against you lot even though the Wigan and Saints games were usually more meaningful.
I can remember running battles on the streets of Wigan back in 79 when housebricks were flying through the air, Numerous fights at matches over the years.
I can understand from a wire point of view that with us not being around for a while you've found other rivals but they wont be as intense as ours! The Widnes fans will make sure of that. it's just a pity the difference in class between the sides at the mo. If we were closer it would be more intense.

i hope the intensity remains on the pitch! i feel those dark days of the 70's/80's should stay as they are, memories. i take my 11 year old to the match and have reassured him that violence at RL matches is as rare as rocking horse cack!
although he was a little puzzled by the hull kr fans fighting with themselves and the heavy police presence post match the other week!
