| Its all down to body shape at the pass regardless whether the ball momentum is forward. Pass the ball behind your shoulder to waist areas and the pass is deemed good.

Good lord - this thread. It's not the work of boffins, physics, body position or magic, it is a basic element of the rules of the game. All explained clearly here
www.therfl.co.uk/the-rfl/rules/o ... rward_pass
[iDirection of Pass 1. The direction of a pass is relative to the player making it and not to the actual path relative to the ground. A player running towards his opponents’ goal line may throw the ball towards a colleague who is behind him but because of the thrower’s own momentum the ball travels forward relative to the ground. This is not a forward pass as the thrower has not
passed the ball forward in relation to himself. This is particularly noticeable when a running player makes a high, lobbed pass.[/i

| Quote ="BrianBradyHandOff"So if 2 or 3 hundred species roar *FORWARD* in unison they are all completely wrong ? Thanks to you boffins I and hundreds of others stand corrected...Thank you for the enlightenment.'"
It's a pleasure.
I have found that the species are not usually a great detector of forward passes. For instance I have never seen the species roar for a forward pass their own side makes. Nor are Wire species particularly accurate in terms of what they say in unison. In the years 1991 to 2008 I heard many chants that we were going to Wembley only to find out that this was incorrect also.
I'd be careful believing all you hear just because a lot of people say it.

| The opposing fans must be in on the act too because they keep saying it's always our year. So the forward pass could be no more than an optical illusion ?
By the way ,be careful talking about species instead of spectators otherwise David Attenborough will be investigating the the thousands of different species turning up at the HJ every week.

| Quote ="Wires71"I think what people are struggling with on here is that the forward pass is judged relative to the passing player, not the ground. That is why they cannot use pitch markings.
Imagine Clarke is running forward at 30kph and passes the ball flat (relative to himself) to a supporting Myler. Both Clarke and the ball have a forward velocity of 30kph. In the 0.25 seconds the ball is in the air it will have travelled forward 2m relative to the pitch. This is a legal pass.'"
so what your saying is theres sod all wrong with the last 2 trys saints scored...

| You can spout as much physics as you want gentleman.
The pass for Saints penultimate try was so far forward it's probably doing the rounds on US TV as pass of the week in the NFL, and the other one wasn't far behind.
Short of calling Swift & Makinson wide receivers Saints couldn't have pushed their luck and (apparently) the laws of physics any further if they'd tried.
