| Well there were lots of problems with individual players tonight; Laithwaite mis-timing his runs, double error by Grix, Riley losing the ball and poor play the ball technique etc etc, but if you look at the broader problems it is a lack of attacking ability and poor kicking. After a run of 6 games it looks to me that GOB is not going to provide the spark at half back, or the much needed field kicking. Unfortunately, I didn't see one threatening attack from Wire and that seems to have been a problem all season so far. I am sure we will do reasonably well over the season as a whole, but we are not going to be top 4 or win anything until TS 'fixes' the half back problem.
Oh, and Roy Asotasi looks to have been a waste of money as well - he is performing as an interchange prop.

| That was a poor game contested by two average sides.
Wigan were awful.
We were truly horrendously terrible beyond anything you could imagine with the players we have. You could have picked a randomly selected team with players from every Championship club who'd never played together before and they would have worked out better plays causing Wigan more problems than we did tonight.
Just appalling.
Wigan were awful too, they were better than us, but I wouldn't be getting excited if I was a Pie. Average at best is what I'd describe them. But us...Christ on a bike. It was like they were all offered a million pound to throw the game.

| I hope Tony remembers he's a rugby league coach paid to win things and not a social worker! I have heard we have got Clark for next season and we better have TWO halves to come in! This season is gone! Also about time people stopped mocking padders as despite having all the natural ability in the world bridge is utterly braindead and beyond frustrating. Would not be a centre in another top six side

| We played one man rugby.
We don't have set play to deal with poor conditions.
Wigan did have and were threats every time.
We had no one and no idea how to break them down.

Wood Harrison and Currie, and for some unknown reason the two Evans' who are better players than some who were selected to play tonight weren't there.

i wonder if we said that after you beat us? Awful how so? scored break away trys, broke tackles, played around the outside of you, kicking game was class and defence was to shabby either. Just because your team can't kick to save its life or put on a decent set play doesn't mean your defence is terrible, which it isn't. Also did you see the weather its hardly going to low error count either.
Seems some Wire fans are trying consolidate them selves by making out Wigan played poorly which they didn't even with O'loughlin and McIlorum out.

Will offer a bit of starch to the forwards. Always impressed with Harrison when i have seen him, hits hard and is hard to stop.

If that was the case, why did it take Lee Briers a decade to win a trophy with the club?
You are certainly looking a bit rudderless without Briers but its very early for knee jerk reactions.I thought Matty Russell looked very good when he came on and maybe having him as the starting full back and Ratchford in the halves will be the answer.Eventually you will find the right formula and come the end of the year still be in the mix.

| I like how soon G'OB is being written off.
For the past few weeks the debate on here has been about G'OB having earned his chance for a run in the side because he's proved himself the most creative of our backs and what signal will it send to other young players at the club if Smith drops him now?
Nothing so far this season has really surprised me, we have won the games we should have won and we have been outplayed by the better teams, that is where we are.
I don't understand all of the anguish on here....we lost Briers, Carvell, Morley and Hodgson four of our best players in the off season and didn't make signings. Of course we were going to drop down relative to the other sides around us, but we've shown enough against the other three sides we've beaten that we aren't going in to freefall.
Maybe there were some people deluding themselves that we had these great youngsters that were going to "step up" and turn in to Briers, Hodgson etc, that was never going to happen to be fair that was just kidding ourselves.
But still I'm sure the positive spin doctors will be on in a bit to say we're only 2 points down on these fixtures from last season so its not all bad.

I'm not trying to be funny with that, nor trying to make myself feel better. Seen far better from Huddersfield Saints Leeds Cas and Widnes this season than that. It was a poor game. Wigan were certainly better but not good. Some good kicks from hand and some good collision, but you can get that from any team.
But let's not let that take away from how bad we were. I'm actually amazed that we could have dished up that performance even looking back at some of our performances against Salford Widnes and London in recent years. With ball in hand close to your line we made about a dozen errors that you see from a school team who've just started playing.
Just astonishingly poor!

| For me, this was more demoralising than the Saints defeat - at least then we could use the excuse that players were getting used to new structures/halves etc.
Make no mistake about it - that was an average Wigan team. A decent team would have been out of sight by half-time and not given us gilt edge chances to get back in it, even though it was clear we didn't have the guile to.
Sadly, we're running out of options in terms of attack. O'Brien was dreadful, Myler was awful at best and generally anonymous, M.Monas is now just a journeyman and I still don't see Ratch as a stand-off. As for the forwards, take Westwood and Higham out and there wasn't a single performance that raised any hopes of better days.
Thanks god Wood and Harrison will be back soon, but we could field the best pack on the planet at the moment and still couldn't engineer a decent attacking structure or punishing kicking game.

This is what I hate about modern Super League, the league has been reduced to meaningless friendlies that don't count. I wonder if we would have played like that if the title was decided on who finishes top of the league? not in a million years.

| I think Wigan peer may be right! Briers did a lot more than just the physical play. Brains on the pitch were clearly lacking tonight amongst other things. Not an overreaction to say none of our half backs are good enough,Russell needs to start and England's menace was needed tonight. Never thought I'd see us out-menaced by Wigan. Horrible.

I thought we played decent especially in those conditions we obviously like to pass the ball these days but its hard when its chucking it down and any contact on the ball in a tackle and it pops out. Its not like you defended crap either really you just don't have the halfbacks to organise the team as they need to be.
I see enough to realise we are on the right track and will be up there again, so will you if tony smith starts coaching attacking structures.

| If I was a Wigan fan I'd be happy with that. Pretty much shut out a team (away from home) that will be in the top 6 come the end of the season in awful conditions. Also, they have a young team which is only just starting to reach it's potential. On our side of things, its worrying how we've gone from being devastating in attack 2 seasons ago and to a lesser extent last year to being clueless as to how to break down a team. The kicking on display tonight speaks for itself.
The funny thing is there are a lot of people blaming the loss of key players, me personally I think the problem is we didn't make more changes over a longer period of time. Not going to name names as don't want this to seem like a knee jerk but I've had this opinion about a fair few of our "stars" for a while. I'd be looking at making some tough calls this season if I was TS - the only worry is, is the talent out there to recruit?
Got to give credit to the usuals:: Super Ben who run his blood to water when he was on, Hill was safe as houses and Higham was our best player 1st half.

| We were pretty poor granted but we do have our best two players to come pack so no panic here. We won at a canter pretty much which is shocking considering we weren't anywhere near our best.
Early days for both teams though. People giving trophies to Leeds and Saints already would be wise to remember how every superleague season has finished for the past 3 or 4 years.
