| Delighted with all of these but a bit suprised with Hodgsons 2 years, yet only 1 year for Briers ?
Who was it on here that wanted Morley shipping off to the knackers-yard a couple of months ago saying he was over & a spent force etc ? Pretty poor considering the injury he had (I could go back and look but can't be bothered).

| T'was me Paul.
I think the amount of players continuing to play SL when well into their 30's is an alarming statement of just how bad a state SL is in at the moment.
These players, including Morley, would not be able to cope in the NRL yet they are holding their own in SL quite comfortably. That tells its own story about our comp IMO.
I still think Morley is way past his best but obviously Smith feels like he can still do a job, which is probably true given that the comp is so weak.
Fair play to Morley though I thought he played his best game in ages against saints on Monday night. I hope there is more of that to come and that he makes me eat my words.
I do wish that we could unearth the next Adrian Morley though.

There are quite a few veterans in the NRL.

Different type of player.
Morley uses brute strength and aggression.
Hill has a wonderful skill of gaining an extra 5 yards during every tackle before he is brought down. Obviously strength is important for this but to is footwork.

| Hill : fully deserved
Hodgson : 2 years is a bit of a surprise as he can't play more than 3 games without picking up some kind of injury, would have thought a year at a time at this stage of his career. Still a class act and a great goal kicker
Briers : still the best half back we have and a year at a time seems to suit
Higham: with the injury concerns still hanging over a Monas this is a good move
Dwyer : great potential, good move
Coops : good move although I don't think he has progressed as much this season considering the game time he has had
Benny : good move
GOB : still potential at this stage but he now has time to grow into his role
Laithwaite : confess to not really knowing much about him but sounds like a good youngster coming through
Morley : going to be a bit controversial here, one good game against Saints for me does not warrant a new contract. Think he is past his best and should have been released, ideally with a GF ring as he deserve a grand finale as he is a legend and will also be so.
Williams and Mitchell : sadly not good enough

With regards to Laithwaite I thought he was fantastic in his time at Leigh. Looked a really rounded, professional, hard-working player and played a very 'mature' game for his age. Looked ready for SL from what he showed in the Championship. Might be getting carried away as he only played 7/8 games in the championship for Leigh but I wouldn't be surprised if he plays for England one day.

| chuffed with that hodgson will play next year and i think he will take on a coaching role in the 2nd and play a few games which will be awesome for ratchfords development as a full back where i think he is best. i hope briers stays on in the coaching staff after he retires as would be good for half back development. morley will be a good presence in the squad and i think the hill contract is the best of the lot as he's been outstanding all year.

| Question - Is TS creating the nucleus of a future coaching team to take over the reigns in 2-3 years? Hodgson, Briers and possibly Morley may have a lot to give in that regard but I'm not aware of what coaching activities they may currently be involved in.

They are too young / inexperienced as yet. This gives them another year or so to develop their skills and adapt to SL. Currie has only played ? 2-3 games, Laithwaite 2, Obrien has had a good run this year but he is still developing, same with Dwyer.

Considering how many youngsters are in our first team, in our squad and will be breaking through next year, it's a fairly crap guess.

Maybe he has encouraged him not to sign an extension so Smith can take him with when he leaves Warrington.
I am happy with all the signings. The only shocks are in terms of quantity of a few but I suppose it just shows the faith that the coaching set up has in some of our best players.
Higham has really played himself into a good contract and lets hope he hasn't got that illness Wilkin has (where he plays well in a few matches to get a good contract and then goes back to the usual dross play) I would have thought that a new number nine was top of the list of things to purchase for next year but he has given Dwyer the perfect opportunity now. (as an aside, who was that guy from Cas that a few people, like deckchair, thought could hook for us?)
On the ones missing, I would have thought that Williams would have been given a little more time to find his feet and so that leads me to think that he may have found a starting position somewhere else. We were bound to reach that point that Wigan and Saints are at, where we have to maintain a good quality in our youngsters and some good youngsters are let go, as we have better options available within.
Great news all round.
Oh and...

I'd say its the opposite, we've learned from recent history on the best way to promote our youth,
2006/7 cooper made his first team bow, we've brought him slowly through and when he's reached 21/22 he's established himself as part of the first team
so too matty blythe, he played at the end of 2008 in the first team, looking like a very very good second row forward, he struggled in the first team in09 and 10, spent some time on loan at leigh and has become a much better player for it, again around 21/22.
Tyke McCarthy, ousted paul rauhihi from the 09 cup final, struggled to stay in the first team after that. Been sent on dual reg at leigh, spent some time on loan at lwakey last year, now, again at 21/22 he's solidified his position in the first team, looking a very important part after people have spent the last 2 years suggesting we release him as he'll never make it.
We seem to be doing alright at the moment.

The point is still valid.
I bumped into him (almost literally- he was waffling on a telephone) outside Halifax (the bank) the other day, he isn't as big as I thought he'd be up close. However, the beard is more mesmerizing that I had anticipated.
