| Not whinging. Just stating that they should be out doing their jobs, like me, and countless millions others have to.
Take a look outside on the road tonight when you go home. There will be loads of HGVs out there. YOU DRIVE THE VEHICLE TO HOW THE CONDITIONS DICTATE. Bin lorries have gone out in compacted snow/ice before.
Quite apt, Rob Wire, that your avatar, is that of a bone idle copper, who doesn't want to do any work!

Which point are you failing to grasp, your above comment is comical. The HGV`s your referring too don`t operate in residential side streets due to weight limits of which the weight limits are their for a reason, most of the main trunk and A roads are clear, its the side roads that are dangerous as they don`t get gritted and thats where the bin lorries operate which is also where kids play in the street and people park cars.

As for the lazy copper comment, for most of my life ive worked 6 days a week including saturday mornings then played amatuer RL on a saturday afternoon straight from work, anyway the bin crews would prefer to be working now because like i said earlier in the thread they will miss out on a lot of xmas tips if their not out and about in the lead up to xmas

We havn`t had winters like this one for a long time, how do you know they have coped in past years when we have had snow and ice ?
Do you have access to the amount of claims that the public have put in due to accidents in the ice and snow in years gone by ? One tap from an out of control, sliding bin lorry is going to do a lot of damge to a car or even a property if its at the bottom of a slope.
It could be that the council have learnt from the past where the adverse conditions in years gone by lead to a lot of accidents involving their vehicles where their insurance companies had to pay out a lot of money hence putting up the councils premiums.
Insurance companies will have a big say in the transport industry as to whether a company wants to risk running its fleet, they may not even pay out if they get proof that the conditions wern`t safe for a vehicle of that size to be operating, their are a lot of clauses in insurance policies especially with HGV`s due to the amount of damage they can cause and the potential payouts for insurance companies. The councils public liabilty insurance will be expensive and tightly worded as well, their are a lot of factors involved before companies decide to shutdown a transport operation of any kind.'"
I had some parcels delivered via HGV today.

OF COURSE HGV's DON'T GO DOWN SIDE STREETS (do I need to state the bleedin' obvious to you). I was simply using the analogy, that HGVs are out there, driving to the conditions. If, and WHEN, the bin lorries do go out, they should do the same. They CRAWL down sidestreets when in conditions like this. After all, they aren't known for their speed (they should be crawling in good conditions, too. After all, they are going nowhere quickly). They've managed to do this in years gone past, in winters just as bad.
Going home now, where I shall be driving on clear roads, then onto side streets, where I shall drive to what the conditions dictate.

That will be from the pressure that a lot of courier companies put on drivers, its one of the lowest paid areas of driving where the drivers get treated like a door matt in the main. I wouldn`t mind betting that if that driver had caused any damage in your street, road or private estate due to the conditions then they would have ripped into him by saying "why the hell did you go down their when it wasn`t safe ?" yet if he didn`t deliver your parcel they would have said "What are you doing bringing this back ? Its only a bit of ice".
Courier firms that operate 16 tonne vehicles have a special dispensation to operate in resedential areas due to the nature of their work, its at the drivers discretion if he goes down the road or not when the conditions are bad but if he damages anything whilst attempting to deliver a parcel then he will get a right verbal hammering when he gets back, maybe worse due to negligence.

So basically what you are saying is the private sector delivers? Drivers who choose to work for courier firms are not forced to take the job.
They, the private sector couriers, are under the same litigation risk as WBC, drive heavy vehicles and are logistically affected (a lot more) by weather. Upshot is public sector failed, private sector succeeded.

| Take about overreacting. It ain't the end of the world is it?. Driving my car on the icy side roads is bad enough. I don't want a 20 Tonne (complete and utter guess) wagon swerving in and out of the often poorly parked cars. Maybe if we didn't have a compensation culture, the council would be prepared to take a small amount of risk !! So either wheel your bins to the collection points (helping out any elderly neighbors) or fill a couple of bin bags and take YOUR waste to one of the waste centres. Whilst walking or driving back, give a few thoughts to the real needy this Xmas...

This is the last i`ll say on the bins subject, you obviously don`t understand how transport works.
I started out as a courier driver before i passed my class 1 HGV, i was a courier driver for 10 years and did on average 60 - 80 drops a day + collections.
HGV vehicles are not normally used for multi drop courier work due to a couple of reasons, they will only be used in the following circumstances.
1. The parcel he was delivering to you was either too heavy or too long for a van or it would take up too much space on his van where he could have fitted 10 or so smaller parcels on instead of a larger parcel, a lot of courier drivers are owner drivers and space is money so 10 smaller parcels will make him/her more money than one large parcel that takes up a lot of space.
2. A driver that normally does your area in a van may have left the parcel off because he had reached his set target, drivers that are employed by companies (non self employed) normally have a target of a max number of drops, if the drivers run has more than his target then he will leave some parcels off (normally the non next day stuff like 2 day etc). A supervisor may then throw a couple of those left off parcels onto a 16 tonne HGV vehicle or 7.5 tonne that maybe going up your way to do a bulk collection from a customer, it makes sense to clear some of the backlog if another vehicle is heading your way.
3. Its xmas so a lot of companies are probably having to use anything thats available to clear the backlog which has been created by the shear volume of xmas parcels at this time of year plus the delays with weather, ive even known them send out parcels in managers or sales reps cars.
Its uneconomical to use a HGV for multi drop courier work as it would use too much fuel, you would never get anywhere near 50 drops done, you would be lucky to get 40 done. Also in a HGV you need a 45 min tacho break after 4 half hours driving, you can`t afford to be delayed for that long with 60 - 80 drops to do + collections.
Anyway, back to the bins. The bin lorries constantly work in side streets, HGV courier vehicles don`t. As you must surely know, when you normally see a courier vehicle flying about its a van and its a van for a reason, a van is the most economical way to deliver parcels plus you don`t need a tacho break, time is everything when your a courier driver with 60 - 80 drops to do then your collections.
So the private sector hasn`t won at all, its rare for 16 tonne courier vehicles to be in a resedential area as they just arn`t economical or practical to use for so many drops where as an HGV bin lorry is constantly in resedential areas, it doesn`t take a rocket scientist to work out which of the 2 is more likely to have an accident on iced over side roads.....

The compensation culture is good in my opinion. Quite liberating actually. Where there is legally liable damage/loss to an individual/business caused by failure of duty of care by a third party I'm all for it. It makes us more considerate as a society. A classic example is all those working people whose lives were cut short/limited by asbestosis due to a failure of duty by their employers. It is right that they are compensated for such loss.
English Law is quite simple. Show reasonable duty of care and you have nothing to worry about.

I was under the impression that women were far superior than men at multi tasking, obviously not lol
Read the thread in its context, i was replying to a point that Wires71 made where he compared courier firms to the council.
