But Lefty Goldblatt mentions Lee Penny. I can't understand that either. Dependable fullback, scored 100 tries for the club. What else do you want?

Parsley's problem is that once he got on the field it was quickly found that he didn't have any potential. Didn't we sign him after he'd appeared on Gladiators?

| I know the OP has said British players but it has to be Toa Khoe Love for me (oh i do realise he qualified for GB )
My problem with Toa was his defence and his reluctance to improve it..When an opposition player was bearing down on him he'd just step to the side and swing his arm around chest level more often than not ending up round the neck resulting in penalties...Complete liability....
With a bit of hard work i thought he could have been one of our best ever centres....

| Wash your mouth out with soap and water!!! We may have got him at the latter stages of his career but woods was a class act for us. If holden had stayed fit those two would have torn teams to shreds. Here's one for trivia buffs, John Woods once scored a hat trick in a competitive match for warrington whilst wearing another team's strip. Who was it against?

Woods was brilliant at stand-off. He was fecked about with when Phil Blake decided he wanted to play in the halves, and Woods ended up being shunted into the centres for a while.

| Has Richard Henare been mentioned yet? An obvious candidate surely?
Edit - I see Rob's first post mentions British players only.

absolutely....anyone just needs to watch the maine road Semi to see how good woods was he was genuine class.
woods was the best half back on the pitch by some distance how we lost that game i still dont know...(well Dave lyon missing touch and lydon with his drop goal had something to do with it) but we were by far the better team and woods was exceptional

If Johns Woods had played in that great Wigan team he would have been classed as one of the all time greats of rugby league, Shaun Edwards was good at what he did which was mainly a support player similar to Richie Myler but John Woods was on another level in my opinion.
He oozed class, he reminded a lot of the great football players like Cantona and Zidane where they always seem to have so much time on the ball and never panick. He could step off both feet, he had that quick burst of speed from a standing start, he had a great passing game and he was also a very decent goalkicker.
Unfortunately we couldn`t surround him with the class of player that Wigan had in the 80`s, John Woods is one of my favourite all time Wire players.
Since John Woods and Tony Myler ive not seen a british stand off that comes anywhere close to the level of those 2, Garry Schofield was a classy attacking player but his all round game didn`t match that of John Woods in my opinion.

I`ll second that, i still can`t believe how we lost that game. That Tony Thornley moment where he should have scored was a turning point.

| This is the same Toa who topped our try scoring for more than 1 year (if memory serves me correctly).
He did change his technique (thankfully).
Very good centre.
Can't put him in the 'massive under achievers' category

I don't buy into thia one. Toa was one of the bewtter defensive centre's! Strong and physical, very rarely got rounded by an opponent. Personally, i think the only thing that let Toa down was a lack of service, especially in his second stint with Michael Sullivan as his pivot.
Jamie Durbin was the biggest let down for me, loads of potential, wasted! But you could put Craig Wingfield, Chris Causey, Warren Stevens, Jamie Stenhouse, Mark Hilton, Gary Hulse, Brent Grose, Dean Gaskell etc in that bracket.

I remember that night well..Think he hit Renouf round the head 3 times in about 10 minutes before the ref sent Toa off...
To the other posters i do realise he finished our top scorer a couple of times i'm not questioning his attacking play its his defence that needed work...
And i agree Toa never used to get rounded probably because he smacked everyone round the head when they tried it....
