Probably the scariest and most disturbing film ever that doesn't have any blood, knives, guns, axes, monsters, ghosts, etc. Also must be one of the prime candidates for the worst ever Hollywood remake despite the fact it was remade by the same guy! |

Sadly, the guy who directed it and played the main cameraman in it killed himself a few years ago.

Some of the new French horror is fantastic, such as Haute Tension (already mentioned as Switchblade Romance) and the most utterly extreme film I have ever seen, Martyrs.
Mind you some early French stuff is great as well including Les Diaboliques and Eyes Without A Face.
Also worthy of a watch is Wolfgang Petersens Das Boot (German of course).
