Actually my smartbooty comment was more insensitive, The Sun is the gutter of newspapers, and the fact that everybody in Liverpool takes offence to mention of The Sun 21 years on, is showing solidarity with the families of the 96, which is good. So I think they are right that it's not the right subject material for banter, and I don't want to be making jokes about it, so I shouldn't have been trying to be smart above. Just had an interesting conversation with an ex widnes player i know.

he seems to be under the impression that Penny is signing for widnes on a full time basis. He has agreed the salary details. Warrington have been waiting on Lee Smith's decision before allowing the deal to happen.

Lee smith has become very disillusioned with rugby union in such a short space of time. He has agreed to join warrington on the same pay that the departing penny was earning (as the salary cap is at its limit).. with an agreement to review it at the end of the season...

he said he has heard both deals should go through before the easter weekend...

I have alot of time for Penny after the way he bust into the team in the only bright point in that defeat to Leeds not to mention the tries after and getting into the SL dream team, he should be playing first team rugby for someone imo and I know for a fact Widnes fans love the lad after how he played for them last year.

I wouldn't say 'most' but I had a similar thoughts about him when he played for Leeds. Although average players can often look good in a successful team.

If there is any truth in the speculation the Tony Smith will know more about him to see the benefit he would bring to the team.

I don't think Wasps will let him go but he's a big game player his performances against St Helens in the past 3 Grand Finals show that, he would be a big improvement to squad for me.

He is a top player, I would love to have him at Wigan, if you can get rid of Mathers for Smith that would be a good move.

Lee Smith is not overrated. The bloke is a class act.

If there's any substance at all in this, I'll be hugely disappointed. Not in picking up Lee Smith, who is a good player, but in the fact that TS will have clearly concluded that Penny is not up to the standard required. Which would be a very great pity indeed.

Imo we dont need him.If by any chance he was seeking a return to SL,then you would think Leeds. Would be the only club he go to.

He reminds me of Riley tbh, natural Rugby player but always probably going to be that touch too small to ever make a dent on a world stage.
Having said that Riley is no where near Smiths ability, no offence to the lad.

If you had gone to the reserves game on Saturday, it would have answered the point about Penny, they just don’t pass to him, to his credit he did keep coming inside to find work but didn’t get very fare, the ball just went to the opposite wing. Its like they just play him because of how much they pay him, feel sorry for the lad but if the reserves don’t even bother passing to him can't see Smith giving him much time. It’s a shame, he’s a nice lad and you want him to succeed but at the moment, he seems surplus to requirement.

Lee Smith would be back with Leeds now had Wasp's supremo agreed to letting him go. He (the supremo) has said he is going nowhere.

Lee wanted to return to Leeds but his boss's have vetoed any move back to SP so doubt there is much chance of him going to you.......but I suppose funnier things have happened
