Livett is a very average player for me. Hughes’ defence gets him above Livett in the pecking order with Livett bottom of the list of backrowers we have

Quote ="Winslade's Offload"Clubs are not a charity and will not offer terms that are more generous than they think a player is worth (and that includes the element of contract duration as well as salary). '"
That's why the Matty Russel contract was baffling. Granted a lucrative 3 year contract for 2017,18,19 then binned 3 games into the 2018 season under Price after the howlers at Huddersfield and Widnes. I think we will still be playing part of his wages through 2019.
So the club has form for lengthy contracts for players which turnout that no other SL team wants. (I'm not suggesting it's the same for Hughes as he is a solid if unspectacular SL 2nd rower).

I think you have over played your hand...1 example is hardly “form”.
Ps I think most of us were baffled by the extension to Russell’s contract. It was obviously a going away present from TS.

A lot were saying things like "I think I'll take TS's opinion on Russell over idiots on a message board".
Some odd signings then.... Taylor Prell.

| I don't suppose any of us knows for certain, but I had always imagined that contract extension discussions would have taken place between the CEO and the coach. Actual monies that could be offered would mainly come from the CEO / accountant ( with his salary cap spreadsheet), together with implications for the rest of the squad ( "sorry, but that would mean you have used up the salary cap if you give him £xx"icon_wink.gif. However, contract length would mainly be a decision of the coach ?
So I don't think you can say our club has a policy towards short/long contracts. A three year contract is probably Price saying this guy is an important member of the team and I want to tie him down for the foreseeable future. I suppose it could also mean that they have had to offer him three years or they would have lost him to a competitor, but it probably arrives at the same conclusion anyway - that Price wants him.
If you don't like the contract duration you can either blame the current market - where there is a severe shortage of quality SL players, or Steve Price's judgement. Just as TS was rightly held to account for handing out a long contract to Russell. Why he even gave Russell a new contract, let alone a lengthy one, is probably one of the greatest mysteries of the modern game.

| I remember Russell playing the worst game he or any other Wire fullback has ever played for Wire.
The CC semi final vs Leeds at Widnes I think it was.
He was god awful from the first second....in contrast BWW...I don't think he got any worse he just didn't get much better.

Difficult to work out why people love to bring up the same old moans. There are some who appear just plain jealous of players who are living their dream of playing for Wire. Others have no sympathy because they've never played but would love to. Some are just life's moaners. It takes all sorts I suppose. Happy Xmas to all.

Giveover. All I did was dare mention that I would have preferred a 2 year contract if we could have got is, as in a few peoples view the jury is out on Hughes. The discussion moved on to other long contracts that recently have proven to be costly.

| Rather than snipping at each other why don't we all back off.....tis the season to be jolly after all and next season will hopefully be jollier than last, which was jollier than the one previous. I include Jack Hughes in this assessment who returned to something like decent form after a poor season prior.
Two or three years might depend upon a number of factors, we might pay less per month for a longer as it has inbuilt security, all things being equal it might suit us to plan Hughes' contract length in line with when other players contracts are ending so there's a bit of continuity and a rolling programme of OOC negotiations. How well will our new SR fit in and how well will our injured SR mend?
The current coach might just rate the bloke based on a 'clean slate' and what he's done for him, we've had plenty of calls on here for new slates given the change in regime at the club and yet we've managed to get a Jack Hughes should it be 2 or 3 years discussion back to TS and Matty Russell, when there really isn't anyone who thought that made sense at any time IIRC
Merry Christmas

| I was hugely critical of Jack in TS final year and rightly so - he was error prone, slow and brought the attack to a shuddering halt whenever the ball came.to him.
But boy what a turnaround. Those who are suggesting he had a decent 2018 may well be getting a visit from three ghosts come Monday night. He had a [isuperb[/i season and addressed all the flaws in his game with style.
It's great news, and three more years under SP will see him improve further, or give some people three years worth of whining. Everyone wins.

| The length of Jack’s contract put into context on the news that apparently the giggling cockney from the “Vapes R Us” stadium has been given a 2 year contract (by them, not us in case anyone was worried).
