Went down to say my final goodbyes this morning before setting off to Bratfurt,not a soul about so had a good wander around inside and out.most of the place is still intact so can't see why the club can't have a leaving 'do' think Morrisseys been in though cos the scoreboards half gone, got some cracking pics and had a tearful moment stood on windy corner, if you want to get in just head for the railway end and follow the trail.

I was in there yesterday afternoon then wandered over to the 'Quarter Bar' on Springfield Street for a party. We somehow ended up with a bottle of JD to our table. Needless to say today has been a struggle!

I believe there are a number of urns containing supporters ashes at either end. I wonder what will happen to them.

I think this is about getting a piece of turf with all the extras like the number and stuff.

I was in Wolfware and a guy with a high-vis and gloves was delivering the potted turf and they had a little discussion about how much had been pulled up (not much, it was a few weeks ago).

I was the only customer in the shop.

They did come from Wilderspool, at approximately the 20 metre line nearest the Railway End but very close to the Snookers side touchline. Those 20 to 30 small pots hardly made a dint in the pitch though.

Any more news or pictures of the demolition?

Also, any news on where or when the turf can be ordered or collected - wasn't it meant to be a the Community event this Saturday?

I am sure we can all remember being on Wilderspool when the surface was so bad that there would not be enough turf on to fill a pot

The bulldozers have moved in, there is a pic on twitter if you search for Wilderspool and choose most recent. RIP.

Sad to see the end of that famous stadium.

Some of us can also remember Wilderspool when it was the best pitch in RL, thanks to Jackie Hamblett.

My remark was not meant to be a slight on the sterling efforts of all the ground staff over the years but you cannot make a silk purse out of a sow's ear. On occasions the pitch resembled a beach because of all the sand that had been put on to make it playable.
I would say that Headingly is the best pitch I have seen in Rugby League.
Having said that, like all Warrington fans, I am immensely sad that the old ground will soon be no more because I have many fond memories of it, particularly as a youngster. I will always remember the excitement and anticipation I felt as I smelled the embrocation coming from the dressing rooms as I made my way to the Kop end to cheer on our heroes who were like demigods to us kids. Funny how such things stay in your mind.

in fact there's more grass on the aerial shot of wilderspool than at headingly........

Wakefields playing surface used to be a very good one....I've known players say it was the best (dire ground though)

Thought I'd resurrect this thread, as the demolition is well under way. Popped over today on my way to town and the Brian Bevan stand is almost gone, as is the Railway End.

i was quite happy NOT going to wilderspool anymore, just not going down the causeway, NOT thinking anything was going on..then i saw that.

Not ashamed to say there's a tear in my eye, a lot of memories in that pile of rubble.

And so the curtain fails on the vestiges of my youth, no time for a final curtain call.

Time to pop Joy Division on the old turntable, methinks.
