| Hodgson is probably the better 'all round' player. But Tomkins is still young and will develop that side of his game. You'd have Tomkins in the team ahead of Hodsgon simply down to his running ability.

| Loaded question because it said who was the better all round player, the answer is pretty obviously Hodgson.
If someone asked who was the better all round halfback Ricky Stuart or Allan Langer then it's Stuart. That doesn't mean you'd have Stuart ahead of Langer given the choice.
It's hard to be negative about either player as Tomkins is obviously a massive talent, as for Hodgson I would put him just behind Lockyer (in his fullback days) and Slater as the next best fullback in world rugby of the last decade or so. There have been a few other fullbacks that have been at the top for a couple of seasons but for long standing consistency and being able to go from club to club and repeat his form every time he moves it's hard to top Hodgson and I expect if you asked the question on an NRL forum you would get similar comments from Aussie fans.

| Hodgson has been terrible every time I've seen him this season. I take it from the fact this post exists that he played well against Catalans?

| Tomkins is obviously supremely talented. The trouble is that, like many top English players, his development is in danger of reaching a plateau. Teams are now not only aware of what he is going to do, but they're finding ways to stop him doing it too. Even Featherstone dealt with him pretty effectively the other week.
At this stage of his career, he needs to get beyond running round teams and work on the 'brains' part of his game. When to pass, when to switch the play, what sort of kick to put in. If he doesn't, he'll still be a fine player but a limited one. I get the impression that a number of Wigan fans are getting annoyed with him for being a 'hogger'.
I'd really like to see him go on to better things because England are in need of a world-class halfback in 2013. Who knows, maybe one day he'll get a chance to play for the club he supported as a young boy.
As for Hodgson, he is absolute class when he turns it on like he did yesterday, a Rolls Royce of a player. If he continues to get that sort of go-forward from the pack, he and Briers will be a pretty tasty proposition again come the meaty end of the season.

| Although they play the same position, they are two very different players. Hodgson is a world class ball handler, tomkins is a world class open field runner with majestic footwork and blistering pace.

| IF Brett was 23 same as Sam then I would take Brett.
Brett has the better temperament joins the line and links up better than Sam does and Brett's goal kicking is worth about 10 points each game.
But Sam is a fantastic talent and he continues to develop then when his 3 years of not talking to any other clubs is up then we might have a look at him.

Hodgson has never been 'terrible' - just occasionaly he falls short of his own high standards.

| Brett Hodgson has had a lot of niggling injuries in recent times which is bound to have effected his form, anyway onto the question from the O/P.
They are 2 totally different players and both contribute in different ways.
Brett Hodgson is a great organiser, passer and he reads the game very well.
Sam Tomkins is the most dangerous broken field runner in our game, give him half a gap and he's gone.
Brett Hodgson would be better compared to Brent Webb as they both do very similar roles and play a similar type of game.

Not being daft here, but they haven't found out a way of stopping him. Unless you count having a shocking pitch in which any back is going to struggle to run anywhere! He's got 10 tries and 15 assists this year already!

| Have to agree with inside_man here, just because you can predict what Tomkins is going to do doesn't mean you can stop him.
Everybody knew by about 1986 that Shaun Edwards was going to pop up on the inside of any move and run in under the sticks and he was still doing it 10 years later.

I'd have Sam at Warrington tomorrow. Superb talent, just at the wrong club.

| I both hate and like Tompkins. Anyone who doesn't enjoy seeing him with the ball in broken play doesn’t share my love of the game. His attitude does seem to be improving as he matures, I’m seeing less of his petulant cheating bar steward side, although it’s not gone all together.
