| My great grandfather was a wire-puller who had all the ligaments in his left hand stretched after getting it caught in one of the machines. In the days before H&S it was a dangerous business.

| My Granddad and all of his brothers only ever worked at Rylands and he is probably spinning in his urn because it no longer exists. My dad spent all of his working life at Rylands and Firth.
Neither have ever seen a wolf.

My Grandad too Worked at Rylands (and Im pretty sure for all his life) a reserved profession during the war, which was good as two of his brothers were killed and the third discharged with shell shock.
My other Gran worked at Lockers where she did 'top secret work' during the war of which she only told us about a few years ago before her death.
After work her and a colleague prepared parts for "radio's", they got an extra two shillings and they werent allowed to tell anyone. she said they 'weaved' really thin wire and it needed a steady hand and good eyesight..
The debate about the demise of Industry in the town was done a few weeks ago.... but really what a colourful life our Grandparents must have led working in these factories....
I doubt I'll be boring my grandkids with tales of the day I got my works pc upgraded and it had a 100 gig processor..!

The club shop sold a book called 'A farewell to Wilderspool.'
That's the only history of the Wire I have ever seen.

| I think the name Wires is outdated now.
We need to move with the times, how about nickname the team the Callcentres.

The late Peter O'Dea (RIP) had a good collection of stuff on his website: www.odeauk.fsnet.co.uk/
May not be the prettiest of formatting but the content is worth a read - I keep meaning to archive that site one of these days before fsnet realise it's an inactive account and delete it.

| I particularly like this insight on one of his pages, I've no idea where he sourced the material from or how accurate it is ... but ...
Quote On 4th December saw Warrington change their colours from black to primrose and blue narrow stripes, with turned down collars. Warrington beat Wigan 5-0 at home in their first appearance in their new colours. It was believed that the change was to impress the wealthy Greenall family, owners of the Greenall Whitley Brewery. Lady Greenall was president of the primrose League, dedicated to promoting women's rights, while the entire family were true blue Tories. Hence Primrose and blue. If that indeed was the reason for the change it certainly paid off as Greenalls became major sponsors for the next 115 years.'"
So there you have it liberals, wear your true blue tory & primrose league shirts with pride
