Westwood swung but actually hit Solomona on the back of the shoulder ! I haven't seen a good quality replay of the incident yet so I can't comment on whether Westwood made clean contact or not, but don't forget the RL rules also take in to account "intent". It's perfectly justifiable in the rules for throwing a punch if there was intent to harm, whether it connected or not.

I'd agree about Tomkins - probably one of the most talented young players (if not the most talented) around right now, but the niggles and particularly the trapping the tacklers arm thing, spoil it and makes my blood boil.

I'm pretty sure I noticed Clarke try something similar against Hull KR unfortunately, very much in line with where we stand in the south and was very disappointed to see it

The difference between the odd cheeky one and Tomkins is that Tomkins does it every time he gets tackled.

Yep, players do try to con the ref on occasion. And the problem people (including me) have with Tomkins is not so much that he does it, but the frequency of which he does it.

What does baffle me is that sometimes he appears to do it while a touch judge is looking directly at it, with a perfect line of sight, yet decides not to inform the referee what he's up to. I do remember a challenge cup tie against Leeds at Headingly one year where Senior conceeded a penalty when trying to win one for his team by flapping about and making it appear that he was being held down, so clearly the refs are capable of penalising the correct person, they just tend not to.
