What exactly is a Winding Up Petition in layman's terms?

Means the creditor hasn't been able to retrieve the cash they're owed so they've submitted a petition to wind the company up. In short if the judge believes it to be valid then the company can be put in to liquidation.

But can be defended - counterclaimed or paid.

All that will happen here is that the debt will be paid and the matter settled. But the winding up order leaves a mark on the company, and costs the claimant a reasonable amount of money to action. It’s the final ‘you leave me no choice but to do this’ option. For a business that isn’t (we assume) short of a few quid, it’s poor administration. And while Konica-Minolta are a large multinational corporation that can afford this kind of action, I hope there aren't any small businesses or freelancers that are also owed monies that, because of someone's tardiness, could ruin them if not received on time.

Bottom line is that it's well known that your club is costing someone a fortune to subsidise. Cash is king and without meaningful income to offset these losses, the cost of bankrolling the club to its current level is increasing not diminishing. Such debts are inevitable, until either the debt level becomes unsustainable or the benefactor moves on and sells up or the income exceeds expenditure.

I suspect more issues may and will emerge. Hope not the case and really hope MK holds his nerve.

As a previous poster said, it's the reputational damage that's the problem here and the fact that no matter how much you try and cocoon the players from it, it will eventually filter down to them and affect attempts to improve on the pitch. Keep the faith.
