Quote ="GT"Just thought I'd give this a brief mention, a few of us popped along to see the U20s take on Oldham yesterday. It's a bit hard to give a full report as there were no teamsheets doing the rounds and we struggled to work out who was who.
Oldham looked a good, organised outfit and got the better of the Salford youngsters 34-22 on a pitch that was more suited to growing potatoes than playing rugby league. Nobody really stood out, Lomax showed some good signs in the first half but then wasn't noticed much in the second, but then again not many of them were. It wasn't all bad, there was some good rugby for a couple of the tries and the effort and determination was there. But a mixture of the conditions and rustiness seemed to conspire against us. Be interesting to see how they get on for the rest of the year.
Was nice to see a game whilst being so close to the action as well, pleasant change to being miles away from the players in a Super League ground.
Friendly welcome from the locals too, just a pity it was so bloody cold.
The Salford line-up, taken from Oldham's site: Holmes; Dolan, Okanga-Ajwang, Ford, Okeh; Higgins, Lomax; Tyson, Files, Pendlebury, Walne, Hankinson, Hope, Subs (all used): Powell, Heaton, Gee, Wells, Bibbby.'"
It's not the best ground in the world but it's their own so good luck to them.
You have to watch the parking around the area, since the locals don't think twice about running a key down your car.
With a little investment they could have a good little set up at Oldham yet you don't see the Rugby League bending over backwards to help them out and that is where the sports governing body is at fault.
Clubs like Oldham have as much history going for them as any Super League club but sadly since it's inception they are now little more than a problem to the RL.
It's good that a few Salford supporters went over to watch and put a few punds into the Oldham coffers. I hope they do ok this year and get out of that division which will kill off a number of clubs.
