| A plea to knowledgeable Salford folk on here...
My daughter is doing a thesis on the role of place in novels and plays (e.g. Edinburgh in Ian Rankin's novels, Oxford in the Morse books etc) and would like suggestions for items involving Salford
Two for starters:
Love on the Dole
A Taste of Honey
Thanks for your help

| Surely East Is East would have to be up there being a modern classic and based in Salford, think it was a book/play before it hit the big screen.

Written by Ayub Khan Din and based on his family and upbringing in Ordsall (I used to date his niece so I should know! ). And it was indeed a stage production prior to cinema release, I remember watching it at the (at the time) newly built theatre in Pendleton College. The actors/actresses that appeared in the film also starred in the stage version, which AFAIK, is fairly uncommon.

| Walter Greenwood also wrote "Saturday Night at the Crown", which I'm almost certain is about a Hanky Park pub - and a good read. I think it might have first been a play with Thora Hird.
It might also be worth seeing what else Greenwood wrote.
Howard Spring wrote about Manchester in [uShabby Tiger[/u, but I always pictured Cross Lane, for some reason - perhaps it's set in Salford in parts. And in the recesses of my mind I recall someone arguing that Coketown in Dickens's [uHard Times[/u is based on Salford, not Manchester. But this was in my undergraduate days, so long ago that Long John Silver had two legs and an egg on his shoulder.
Getting back to Hobson's Choice, Salford Fire Brigade provided the water for the rain scene in the film, and my Uncle Ted was one of the blokes aiming a hosepipe. Good, eh?
