| Decent player but nothing special at the moment. Solid is the word most would use for him. Good defensively but I doubt you'll notice much in attack. Your typical young backrower from a top SL club. There have been tons before that have come through and moved on once they need a contract extension.

| These kind of signings can be very good. Young lad from a top side who has not had a contract extension for whatever reason. We have a decent track record recently of these types of signings. Robinson and Dodgy Hodgy being good examples.
Hopefully, Ashurst will repay and develop over three seasons. Nice to see the nucleus of probably the youngest squad we have ever had taking shape.

Cheers Saddened, the special things for me about him is that he has signed for the reds, he is young ( 21) & injury free. he comes from a top club and already has alot of experience under his belt.
lets hope he makes an better impression than Tim Jonkers & Mark Edmundson. two other ex Saints back rowers we had who were cursed with injury.

| Was speaking to someone at GF about Matty, he has watched him for the last 4 years and speaks very highly of him. Certainly respect this guy's opinion and his view is it's a big mistake by Saints, he regards Matty as one of the next best things in terms of back row forwards, very skilful and a great athlete.

| Posted this on the 7th September in your rumours thread , meant to say 2nd rower not back rower (as i corrected 2 posts later) Quote ="Vino Blanco"You've signed a St Helens back rower today ...i'm not sure i'm allowed to tell you yet who it is yet though but it's 100% true
'"
Matty will be a big hit for you guys and will get better the more he plays, Potter seemed to rate him when he was at the helm but he hasn't really been given a chance at S***ts by simmons especially towards the end of the season and seemed to be 18th man once simmonds knew he was leaving

| He's not a bad player and was unlucky at Saints - I think it came down to a choice between him and Dixon and he lost out. We have some more young forwards coming through the ranks like Hale and Forster and I think the club was looking to clear some space to maybe give them some game time next year.
Hope he goes well for you lot.

Good luck to Salford and Matty Ashurst in their combined quest to achieve play off rugby.
Matty Ashurst isn't the second coming, he's not 'the next big thing in second rowers'. If he gets anywhere near being that it's Salford's achievement.

From my comment there you've come up with that! You should change your name to Clinton Baptiste...
You're just reminding us of what a bunch of d icks your fans really are.

| Don't really not what to make of this, yes he's a young forward, yes he's been at a top set up, but I'll say it once again we have a pack full of young players who lets face it offer nothing going forward. They're all just "solid" players so I keep getting told. Lets hope this year they offer just a little bit more than "solid" otherwise we could be in trouble.
Like everyhting else time will tell. Good luck Matty and Welcome.

This is a good point. I think we're going to have to pin our hopes on Parish being able to whip the likes of Feka, Sidlow, Jewitt and Boyle into shape in pre-season to give us the go forward we will require.

| Yet another young forward to add to our collection of other "brilliant" young forwards. They are all so good/exciting/amazing/brilliant that he might not even get a game...

| For his age he is outstanding. The key is how he progresses at Salford were he should get more game time.
He has the potential to be a top notch backrower. Certainly possesses the size pace and handling ability. Just needs the physical maturity to start punching holes in defences.
As a guide of how good he could be, as youself how many other 21 year old backrow forwards have already played over 50 first grade games.
I suspect he has moved because he wants to make the step up, and thinks that at Saints he might be held back a bit due to being seen as merely a squad player because of the more experienced players such as Soliola and Wilkin who are infront of him.
There is also the not inconsequential matter that Saints have a number of very high quality young backrow forwards coming through who would undoubtedly demand to get given their chance.

Spot on...He wants to play Rugby , that's the be all and end all of it , he's a talented lad who has seen his amount of appearances held back under the present coach, even missing out on reserve grade games because he has been chosen as 18th man for senior games and therefore travelled with the first team, i'm sure he will go from strength to strength at Salford , i just hope that they can build a team that will challenge for the play-offs at the very least,if they do i'm sure he will shine and show his talent.
I also agree with you about the lads coming through , as a Wigan fan i think both Saints and Wigan are always going to have many talented lads who they have to let go(and get criticised for) because the sheer amount of them that come through is too many to hold down a first team spot.
