I just reading a good article on the star about the new stadium and stuff that come out from the East Salford community committee www.salfordstar.com/article.asp?id=1114. Some council worker saying it has to wipe its face.
I hope the club doesn't get tarred with this as it the councils' policy.
One thing i dont get is if the council are running the stadium to "wipe its face" are we payin full rent. I always thought we were only paying a token amount. It seems a bit daft if they are charging kids teams a lot to use the outside pitches etc whilst we are paying peanuts.

| Ah the Salford Star, the very paragon of unbiased journalism.
Why shouldn't the council charge for useing it's facilities? I have to pay to use the Fat City gyms.

I have never read the Salford Star and with some of the articles that have been quoted/published on here I haven't missed much.
I have to pay to use the Fit City facility, lots of youngsters who swim for City of Salford have to be paid for, the local cricket and football teams have to pay to play etc, etc.
If the council(and I am far from one of it's fans)are charging rent for the facility and are genuinely hoping to re-coup their outlay, whats wrong with that? and from what I see, papers such as the Star are just trying to stir things up.
Just imagine if the council let someone use the facility for free, this same paper would be saying out outrageous it was.
The club will have done their sums on using the stadium and yes it will probably cost more than the first stadium plans but that was not to be, lets see how the club and the stadium fare before getting the knives out.
I wonder if the Star will be in attendance at the first home match and if they are will they have bought a ticket like the rest of us?

| When did the 'community' bit get dropped from the name?
On the new website it's referred to as 'The Salford City Stadium'

| "a £22million loan from Salford Council," ... which means that national government and national auditing bodies will expect the place to be run as a profitable business to recover the loan and interest. Please note the amount of cuts needed by any council : and Salford then need to explain £22 000 000.
" which has set the Stadium up as a joint venture company with Peel Holdings" ... Peel will also look to turning over a profit.
Community, pepper-corn rents, etc. all went when the original company folded and Peel came on board.

| £22m + £4m = £28m according to that story. maybe they should be put in charge of running the stadium with that ability to find an extra £2m!

| It is normal for a charge to made for community facilities, unless the project/sessions they're being used for has had specific funding from somewhere.

I`d hazard a guess that most us know the price of food and drink in stadiums is expensive , there is a choice of wether to shell out for it or not.

How do you draw that line from the pointless scare-mongering story linked to above?
By the way, food and drink are expensive in most grounds. It's not a shock to anybody.

You said it twice, does that mean you have two mates .
I would hardley class the warm can of froth for £2:50 that we used to get at the Willows as brilliant value for money, as long as it's palletable and cold I'll settle for it every couple of weeks. The price of the food on the other hand is daylight robbery, do feel sorry for anyone taking nipple nibblers and having for fork out for frozen chips at a massice price only for said nipple nibblers to eat a few and then dump the rest and demand something else. Can see when the retail aspect of the site is finished that a (or possibly more than one) fast food type place will open.
Still think that a beefeater or something of that nature offering say 20% discount to season ticket holders on site would be a massive hit both on match days and at other times.

| Salford Reds have kindly allowed community/charity matches to be played at the Willows free of charge over many years. I'd have thought that this will continue at Barton for special events such as Salford School Cup Finals and fund raising events etc.
Salford Star's notion of free use of the artificial/grass pitches is totally impractical and would inevitably discriminate against many citizens within the community. Can you just imagine the fall out from hundreds of sports teams in the city all staking a claim to train or play at Barton for free?
Occasional free use of Salford Sports Village to my knowledge is for training and matches for kids who represent Salford sports at School level. If Barton was free it would set a very dangerous precedent for all the schools/colleges who charge for evening and weekend use of their sports facilities. Just because something isn't free doesn't mean it's not a community facility!
