Seriously? Did you blackout for the first 60 minutes ? Perhaps towards the last 15 minutes. Prior to that My dad and I commented on how lifeless it had been for long periods. It almost felt like watching an U21's game at one point. At Wigan, Saints an Warrington the fans scream at the ref and linesman and tonight our lack of vocal support and vocal pressure showed on Silverwood... he couldnt have been more relaxed...do you think he would have ignored all those oppurtunitys to blow up at Wigan, Saints, or Warrington. Fat chance, he would have been twitching nervously. You can say it's big club syndrome however I blame it solely on there fans vocal harassment of the Ref. That and how the players are tought to play the ref. Tompkins only has to flail his legs around at the JJB and there 40 yds up the field. In that area we aren't playing clever rugby. I don't for one minute agree with cheating or bullying however the clubs at the top end of the table are more "switched on" when it comes to clever rugby. Thats probably down to coaching but players as individuals aren't stupid. They know when to play the percentages and get away with easy meters for dubious penalties.
We seriously lack a ruthlessness as a team (and fans) to make a serious challenge if we do make the play offs.
I was glad of the win don't get me wrong but there was a complete lack of urgency tonight, something which will blow us out the water against better teams.
Let's not forget that was a team that got NILLED last week by HULL KR....
The sooner Parish arrives the better. Hopefully he can magnify this run of consistency and form to catapult us into a good playoff run.
But there is allot of room for improvement.
Points for Parish:
Holdsworth kicking?
Stef's poor decision making when in good a position?!
Fekas lack of movement from deep in our half ( We know the reasons behind this but it needs addressing if we are to maximise his potential)
Anderson's fitness (slowing down our 20m restart for being last man back)
We could go on after tonights performance, but what concerns me the most is how we continued to be dominated in the tackle against a team which has conceded a draw dropping 674 points. I appreciate they were up for the task after last weeks defeat at the hands of Hull KR , however the difference between us and them and how we failed to dominate collision and the tackle on a whole was a joke.
They had at least 3 men in the tackle when inside our own half and controlled the ruck much better than we did. On the rare occasions we had 3 men present the ball was still coming loose, and if that happens again against a team that promotes the offloading then we'll be ripped to shreds. Exactly that happened happened against Warrington in our 60-0 defeat and I couldn't go through that again especially in the play offs. This also concerns me when our Head Coach was originally drafted in to tighten up defence?
Like I said don't get my wrong i'm over the moon with the win and the players effort and team effort and I certainly wasn't one of the fans hurling ridiculous abuse at Patten when his brain fart occurred however there is much room for improvement if we are to continue along this path.
On a positive note i'm really impressed with how our forwards and props in particular are progressing.
Jewitt is a different player,
Sidlow has grown a pair
Boyle is...errr immense
Neale is tireless
Adamson is taking on the line more
and Ray and Feka have been reliable and persistent.
Well done lads.
Good effort lads and good luck against Hull next week...
