Hugely curious election results for those who like stats...the Tory vote didnt really increase much, the labour vote could have been worse I think, UKIP was only up by about 1 pp while the BNP share wasn't markedly up (the actual number who voted BNP in the NW was lower than last time!) while the lib-dems saw a marginal drop. The big winners were the Greens!

BNP targetted the Northwest (and why Nick Griffin stood here) because the % they would need to get a seat is lower here than in other regions beacsue we have the largest population of any region (excluding London).

BNP got 8.0% of the vote in the NW and it got them a seat -
they actually got higher shares of the vote in the North East (8.9%), the West Mids (8.6%), the East Mids (8.7%), and Yorkshire and Humber (9.8%). Of course the figure in Y&H got them a seat there too.

the real question is who would the non-voters have voted for given that turn-out was down? did the traditional labour vote just not turn out or was there a real shift? Gives every party stratgic nightmares as a replication of the European vote in a general election would not have given the Tories a majority in parliament! expect them to lurch to being more anti-EU to ensure they snare the UKIP vote at general election time...while Labour must be praying that UKIP actively contest marginal seats next year to split the Tory vote!

In terms of number of votes it was an unusual election. Labour down 1.3million votes, Tories down 200,000 votes, LibDems down 350,000 votes. Which suggests that there is still no real appetite for Cameron and his slick pr men.

BNP vote only went up 80,000 which is tiny really, especially given the amount of coverage they had beforehand and the claims they make about popularity. Others like socialist labour and no2eu would have picked up some old labour voters.

We're actually looking at about 1million Labour voters who simply didn't turn out. If they can convince them to do so at a general election and things could be very different.

Isn't that what they died for though? Our freedom? Freedom to choose who we want to vote for in a democratic election?

However, let’s not kid ourselves in thinking that any of the folks who fought in or lived through WWII wouldn’t vote for an anti-EU party. Naturally, I suppose, some of them will be nationalist and/or xenophobic, and therefore would be more likely to vote for UKIP or the BNP.

Hence my use of "Ironic". Yes people fought for the freedom to vote for whoever they see fit to. Thats perfectly correct and i wouldent want it any other way. Its just dissapointing that people have seen fit to vote for a party,all be it a legitimate one, that espouses such extreme views.

Correct. The apathy of the majority of the population is a real concern. The threat of a fascist party gaining one seat should be enough to encourage more people to vote. Unfortunately nearly seven in ten of the adult population of the north west couldnt care less

What people appear to be missing the point on here is that there are enough people in this country who are so fed up with whats going on that they would vote for a extremist party.

Nobody said they did. However anybody who isn't entitled to be in this country by law should not be whether they are white, brown, black, yellow, red, pink or blue and thats where your problem starts.

Surely people have the right to vote for who they like, I have heard various comments in the media saying that the party should be banned which then is exacting the type of restriction of free speach the people making the statements advocate.

My opinion is the BNP should be encouraged then we can see openly what the people who support that kind of tripe are up to and not have them go underground and untraceable.

What's that got to do with the BNP? The BNP will kick out anyone who is entitled to be in this country purely because they're not white. That's the problem.

As I've said elsewhere, I can't see any evidence that we're flooded with illegal immigrants. Official census statistics show that those of 'ethnic minority' backgrounds here legally are far, far outnumbered by white British people. So what's the problem, exactly?

If people are so fed up with what's going on in this country that they vote for an openly racist party, then those people have some serious issues.

Maybe you walk around with your eyes shut then, the last census was years ago, can't remember exactly but I reckon I filled it in at least 7 years ago, so talk to me about that again next time in 4 years? (but dont forget to use ignorance in the 'official statisics' of how many filled it out) and how many illegals weren't accounted for? Like anyone using those 'official statistics' prefer to do now.

You can start on my row on Weaste Lane if you want to judge a majority share to whites and blacks then maybe move along to Leicester as an obvious second choice. However it's pretty obvious there is a total number of a majority of whites in the country, only an idiot couldnt work that out but take your head out of the sand. I could load you with a barrage of problems but I wouldnt want to add to an insignificant public outcry.

FWIW I didn't vote BNP but if I chose to I couldn't give a toss what anyone else thought, it would be my opinion and my opinion alone. I would imagine theres not a chance in my life time that they'll ever get elected, although as some forum members know who I still owe a bet for, I did state that there would never be a black president of the United States of America in my lifetime so you never know
