Depends whether Salford want to ease the salary burden or not. Patten was contracted for next year too remember.

Why would they release a contracted player that other clubs are rumoured to be interested in? If they wanted to ease the salary burden they would surely replace those coming out of contract with new players on less money.
I can understand them letting Patten go because he's 32 on big money and wants to simply retire. No doubt the club will keep his registration to prevent another Hudson Smith situation.

Was Patten not contracted for 2 years with the option of 3rd?

| Extract from th'advertiser............seems reasonably positive,
[iReds also insist that Daniel Holdsworth’s long-term future is secure at Salford despite on going reports linking him with Super League rivals Hull.
Holdsworth still has a year to serve on his current contract.
Reds’ coach Phil Veivers does not want to lose the former Canterbury player. Veivers already has to find quality replacements for Luke Patten, Matty Smith and possibly Sean Gleeson as well.
Reds’ officials have been speaking with Holdsworth’s agent. There has also been talk of him possibly returning to Australia.
Hull have also been linked with Castleford’s Rangi Chase.
Any move for Holdsworth from a rival Super League club would entitle Salford to demand a transfer fee for the specialist stand off with him being under contract. Holdsworth’s team-mate Luke Patten feels it would be in Salford’s best interests to build a new-look team around Holdsworth.
Patten said: "DJ is a quality player – the stats confirm this. He was a major factor in influencing my decision to come to play Super League and sign for Salford.’’ [/i

| It would be folly to try and start afresh with a new half back pairing, put Snyed @ 7 and DJ @ 6 and we've got a year to give Snyed lot's of experience and then look to replace DJ as I have little doubt at the end of next season he will be off.
I'd also look at trying to get hold of the full back at Wigan last week fon a one year loan, as he looked a good prospect and he is highly unlikely to get past their current number one.

| Holdsworth noes the position we are in,he might think he needs to better is own position and is future.
If Hull or Leeds come in for him he would be a fool not to go,good luck to him.I don,t think he will be here next season.

| If the clubs sell DJ, thats me done!! i won't watch them if they see their best player, he is as good as I have seen in over a decade and to sell him for such a pitiful sum would be the end of the line. If they run their contract out I can just about deal with it but to sell him would be suicide!! Having watched the exiles you can see what a great player he is behind a decent pack a true aston martin player who makes if look eassy, come on salford lets give him the platform to spin his decks!!

Not necessarily. If the club and Holdsworth agree to a release then there would be no fee at all.

Would Arsenal let Robin Van Persie go on a free this summer to Man City or Man Utd? or do you think they would get the biggest fee possible for him before his contract run down?

I wouldn't get too carried away with the performance in the Exiles match. Let's be honest it was a second string England that were very poor. I've seen bigger hits in a game of tick and pass.

They'd try to get the biggest fee. Daniel Holdsworth however is not Robin Van Persie and RL (thankfully) is not football.
Some clubs/chairmen/coaches wouldn't want a player who isn't fully committed and so would let him go and release his wage on the cap.

So any sought after player who's contracted and has the possibility of a pay hike at another club just has to say I'm are not commited anymore and the contract isn't worth the paper it's written on? Let's get real here.

In some instances yes. That's why players leave clubs when they're still under contract to go back to Australia or elsewhere.

| Interesting to read Shaun McRae say that Holdsworth has a year left on his contract and then the option of extending that, is that option in our favour or his? If it is in ours I would say that is quite a good starting position to either extend his contract (and up his wage) or negotiate a larger fee with another club. Does anybody know about this option?

straight from the cheats mouth, I would expect this sort of statement from some one who follows Wigan a team caught cheating more times than any other SL club, and poss over the SC again with Matty's signing.

| Players leave for three reasons, they don't like where they are,the club don't want then any more,or more money.
Matty Smith left because he thinks Wigan offer more chance of winning things, and money. If Daniel Holdsworth leaves
and I think he will,he will go for the same reasons, and possibly Gleeson went for the same reasons also.If a club want's
to get rid of a player they will even If that player want's to stay,so we cannot talk about loyalty there Is none
Its there living,so good luck to them, the vast majority on here would do the same.

Players can retire, some do, some should but wont.
Players can be dismissed for gross misconduct, some are, some get away with it.
Players can earn more outside the game and just pack it in.
The contract system has resulted in many clubs at certain times losing players to other clubs despite offering the players good money(what the club can afford, more in some cases)
It should also mean that any club who wants a player still in contract, should negotiate and pay a fee, which Wigan have done for Matty Smith, good luck to him and the club for getting some money that wasn't expected.
In Sean Gleesons case he is out of contract at the season end, I am unsure if the club have made him an offer or not but again good luck to him at HKR.
In Daniel Holdsworth's case when he was signed for us many people said Daniel Who? and nit picked about his game, I was one who thought that he could be very good and I think that he is, but he has another 12 months left on his contract and if he honour's it that's not loyalty, it's called honouring a contract which he would expect the club to do.
I personally cannot believe that Daniel would want to be involved with a person who as a coach stifled his game to the point where he lost all his form and almost saw the club off, despite any extra cash.

This newspaper piece suggests that Hull's search for a half back is concentrating on Rangi Chase and that their attempts to sign Daniel Holdsworth fell through.
If it's true it's excellent news for us.

| Agreed, when DJ gets back from his Malta holiday the Salford management need to sit down with him and sell him the benefits of staying with us.
Let's hope there are enough to convince him to stay.

Maybe not. . .
Very strong 'rumour' in East Hull DH coming to Rovers and thats why FC have dropped interest.
Rovers tried to prise him away before signing Blake Green.
Like I say its only rumour but when this type comes out of the blue (in Hull anyway) it makes you wonder.

| I thin it would be best to keep him because a new half back partnership starting next seasons is hardly ideal, but if he does go we should get every possible penny for him rather than letting him go on the cheap to released funds off the salary cap.

Oh dear. Looks like he's decided to pi[is[/is it all away, take a year out and then end up at Doncaster. I can't see it going any other way because, knowing that strong rumours from reliable sources are always 100% accurate, the only way he can be [url=http://viewtopic.php?f=20&t=531932&tsmp=1342367314&start=82nailed on for Hull[/url [iand[/i joining Hull KR is if he's got some kind of Paul Cooke arrangement in place.
Doncaster have got themselves a good 'un in DJ.
