Every single business adjacent to the Stadium site all list their addresses as :-
Eccles , Manchester M30 ===
Macro's been there since the early 70's so this conspiracy has been long in the planning ,
Annoying I know but Eccles has always been a Manchester postal district M30
Eccles / Postal Town -Manchester / Local authority- Salford

| Two things:
1. The reason why Salford City Council invested in Media City, The Lowry and the new stadium is to raise the city's profile - because Salford doesn't have an identity. We have largely borrowed our culture from Manchester; the council know this. This is why David Dimbleby et al. are told to refer to Salford as [iSalford[/i and not just a suburb of Manchester - because Salford City Council pour tons of money into the operation. So as trivial as a postal address is, what the fudge are Salford City Council getting out of the new stadium if it doesn't rest =#FF00FFIn Salford?
2. I've always appended Salford rather then Manchester after Eccles or Swinton addresses just be an obnoxious bellend. Never did the relevant post not reach its destination.

| There is a slight problem that when you use that postcode in any of the search engines for bus routes and what have you it isn't recognised.
Just doing a bit of research and getting to and from games looks a piece of cake from Eccles and the Hope area as the 67 runs about every 15 mins both ways until 22:40 and then goes to every 30 mins.

| Did you know that Manchester Airport has a WA (Warrington) postcode? Geographically the Manchester postcode area (Square Miles) is one of the smallest in the North of England and if you took Salford out it would be about only two thirds the size it is now. The simple fact is despite Salford being a city it isn't geographically big enough (37.5 square miles) for the Royal Mail to warrant giving Salford it's own postcode area.
Interestingly the Manchester postcode population is 498,800 and Salford makes up 229,000 of that figure. (46%)

Innit.
Plenty of individuals and businesses put Salford as their address, regardless of which part of the city they're in. Surely the address for one of the biggest assets the city of Salford has should be Salford, not Manchester?
Of course, it's a trivial fact, the club can do no wrong, it's moaning for no reason, etc. etc.
Dripping tap.

| Fair points - you can write Salford rather than Manchester, as long as the post code is right it will get there. I do think there is a difference between postal addresses and talking about where something is though, it's the latter that is most important.
I do find more people from West Salford (Eccles, Irlam, Swinton, Clifton, Walkden) saying they live in Salford rather than Manchester and people are definitely becoming more proud of being associated with our city. I guess part of that is that it takes a long time to form an identity. I grew up being told that Salford Council had ruined Irlam by underfunding the summer fair and building the "new" estate (even then 20 yrs old!) for their overspill, yadda, yadda, yadda. I was one of the few who really associated with the city of Salford, mainly because I followed the rugby team. People tended to say they were from Manchester or Lancashire rather than Salford.
I think though with the improvements in recent years, the BBC, the stadium people are definitely more positive about the place. Even the magenta rebranding is part of that, giving Salford a distinctive image despite the controversy at the time.
Anyhow not sure what this has got to do with the original posting but just thought i'd share it with you

| As anyone who has even a slight contact with me will testify, I am a very proud Salfordian. Despite living in Rochdale for 20+ years, I cannot see myself as Dale-bound or similar. However, we need to realise that Manchester as an address is (sadly) older than even post-codes: remember Salford, Broughton, and Swinton used to contest the Manchester Cup (OK, almost 90 years ago).
I also remember well that olde persons in the Pendleton area never used Salford but Pendleton in their address: De La Salle, Pendleton for example.
But I do dislike Eccles, Manchester or Swinton, Manchester as we conquered these hamlets in 1974.

| A few years ago, some Salford businesses campaigned for Salford to have its own post codes but the Post Office said no. Maybe with the development of Media City, the campaign will start again.

That's the key thing. Yes, the Post Office allocate postal addresses, but you have leeway in what you use. Look at Salford City Council, after they did their =#FF00BFIn Salford branding to highlight that it is not Manchester, it was realised that for years they had been showing the main address at Swinton Civic as "Manchester" - they simply changed it on their communications ( www.salford.gov.uk/addresses.htm). Businesses (and residents) "personalise" their addresses all the time to say what they want - check out the number of Little Hulton and Wardley businesses that claim to be in Worsley. My own employer is based in Hulme and calls it Castlefield in the address.
As chico pointed out - if a key point in this place being to add to the awareness of Salford, then the SMC can just decide to list their address accordingly. I half think that they have done it deliberately thinking that they are more likely to pick up conference trade.

That's fairly typical when a new postcode is allocated - the building I work in is about 9 years old and still doesn't show on some systems.

No, it has it's own postcode area (M90).

You are right it's the surrounding Ringway area that has a WA15 postcode. It appears as the Airport complex grew it was given special dispensation for an M postcode. This was probably to stop people querying why it was called Manchester Airport when it had a Warrington postcode with part of the airport located in a different county.

Some of Salford's programs from the 50s list The Willows as being in Pendleton. Though I wonder whether telephone numbers had some influence here. Lots of local numbers were listed as PEN xxxx - PEN equating to 736.
My dad usually doesn't put postcodes on his home address either. 'Salford 5' or 'Salford 6' sufficed for him. Perhaps that's why he hasn't won the pools in the last 40 years.

| As i posted elsewhere on this site Manchester/Salford was the original postcode district of which there was 8 before 1970 so you had Salford 6 for langworthy Pendleton and Seedley, but to make it easier the "M" monicur was adopted by the PO after 1970 so Salford 6 became M6, and so on. Other Post towns in Greater manchester Include Wigan, Bolton, Stockport and Oldham, it is just a way of getting mail to the right places, Salford Quays is M50 not M3. Then again the only thing that lets the system down is the human element, but it is a good way to get to know your neighbours when you deliver their post for them after your house becomes a secondary distribution centre.

| Aren't the postcodes related to the larger sorting offices? That's why Leigh has a WN postcode although the Post Office list 'Leigh, Lancashire' as the postal town with no mention of Wigan. All a bit weird mind as if I lived 100 yards down the road then I'd have an M46 postcode. I certainly understand where people are coming from though and it's a bugbear from our point of view to see 'Wigan Council' all over the place after they rebranded by stealth from the previous Wigan MBC, which at least acknowledged it was the merger of the old boroughs.

| Correct: it has little to do with the town or council. The daftest post code in the area for me is Bacup's: OL!
Sadly it becomes more irrelevant as time goes with no more Rochdalians, Salfordians, etc with maternity in foreign parts.

I think it's only 'difficult' cases that will be shipped down the congested A6 and into Manchester. Normal births will still be in the Celestial City.
