Quote The top flight of English rugby league has been approached about selling an equity stake to its Australian counterpart in a deal that would shake up the sport's ownership.
Sky News has learnt that the Super League, which features clubs including Wigan Warriors, Catalans Dragons and Leeds Rhinos, has held talks in the last few days with Australia's National Rugby League (NRL) about a possible deal.
The talks, which are at a very early stage, are expected to continue next week, according to insiders.
Precise details of the terms envisaged by the NRL were unclear on Wednesday, although senior figures inside the sport said they expected the NRL to seek a controlling stake in the Super League if a deal is to proceed.
One observer put the value of a 50% stake in the Super League at approximately £75m.'"

I've read a few of these reports, and can't quite find out where the return on investment lies?
I've just read Mr. Lenegan had to put a pile of cash into Wigan to balance the books.
So if I take a 50% stake in Wigan do I have to tip up 50% of the losses next year?

| Looking further into this it doesn't seem the NRL stake is about reaping profits, rather shoring up the two games. It's often said the NRL has no care for the English game, which may be true if we think about International Rugby but if this is about ensuring RL keeps a decent world profile then maybe the two major cornerstones of the sport are somehow better together.
Revenue has been hammered by the ban on spectators and it is hammered a second time by the impending lowering of the SKY deal, and a third blow is the possible loss of betting company sponsorship and advertising revenue as the English government seek to stop betting and lotteries from draining people's pockets in these arleady hard times.
But of course we are going to carry on giving away Superleague places to New York, Ottawa and Toulouse. Time to get real.
What real is going to look like 2022 I'm not sure, the Australians already run a kind of unofficial system where the English/Aussie/NZ/south seas professional Rugby League player pool is administered by the very best players going to the NRL, with English clubs effectively getting second pick. In addition as SKY reduce the sums they have been paying for League maybe the Aussie/English erm "Partnership" is about protecting the World game i.e. having a joint English/Aussie approach to TV deals in which the Aussies encourage SKY not to drop off supporting Superleague, because without a Superleague in England would we really have a real World game. Would the Aussie game retain the same stature? Yes we have had an imaginary Transatlantic game in recent years but this was never going to pay the bills - only heavily rack them up as we saw........................

| Does anyone have a non-dodgy link. If something doesn't come from a reputable source is it even worth talking about?

| The current guys in charge of the NRL are not afraid to make radical changes to make money.
The only way I can think of for them to make money out of this would be to change RL back to a winter sport in the northern hemisphere and run a year round sport with TV deals that reflect that.

Well the RL message boards talked about Eric Perez's plans for the future of the game for the last five years, literally thousands of posts about the Transartlantic dream that morphed into World leagues........

At least we could then get some unified rules:
https://www.nrl.com/news/2020/12/11/nrl ... =true&s=08
Quote The changes are:
the introduction of a two-point field goal for kicks taken from more than 40 metres out;
six-again to be called for 10-metre infringements;
penalties for teams if they leave a scrum before a referee calls "break";
a play-the-ball restart if the ball or player with the ball goes over the sideline;
The Bunker will now review replays after an on-field referee awards a try but a conversion attempt will not be allowed until it gets the green light;
injured players will be interchanged if a trainer ask for play to be stopped;
when a captain's challenge is inconclusive a team will not be docked for an unsuccessful attempt;
and a handover will be ordered when a player does not make a genuine attempt to play the ball correctly with their foot. '"
We could at least start with the genuine attempt to play the ball. SL PTB rule change in 2020 was nothing short of a joke. Nobody tried to PTB correctly and the refs did nothing to enforce it.

| The DG rule is stupid.
The bunker ruling means there won't be any point having an on field ref soon. Just let the bunker do it all.
