| Hopefully even these chavs will see the need for a London franchise. Anything is better than another internal, parochial, inward looking northerner at the helm.

| The wrong answer to the wrong question. And it's pretty embarassing that we're so desperate for a "messiah" that we're allowing a self-publicist such as him to feign interest in the sport for his own personal interests.

| I haven't seem him slag it off - he has stated a fact that many RL fans are comfortably familiar with; the game is on its knees - financially and in reputational/PR terms. It's lamented on here on a daily basis for starters.
He may be an abrasive character, but he has a strong track record of turning around the fortunes of various sports; certainly a more attractive proposition than Nigel Wood or Ralph Rimmer.

Well of course its in his own interested, he is a promoter thats his business, now if he can boost RL profile and boost sponsership crowds etr tgen he will have done a good job and be paid handsomely for ir.
Now wether he is the right man for the job is open for debate.

If Eddie Hearn is still talking about RL next week I would be amazed, never mind next month.
There are 12 clubs in Super League alone. That means that there are are at least 12 people in the game with the word "marketing" in their job title. If they aren't working to increase crowds, reach new audiences and grow sponsorship revenue, then what the feck are they doing?
The game doesn't need a saviour, it doesn't need a messiah. It needs club owners to see the bigger picture and for people to do their jobs properly.

You can state a fact and still slag something off. All I meant by slagging off was that he was saying a lot of negative things about the sport. There are also a lot of positive things about the sport but he doesn't care to state these things. I was just saying that I am getting fed up with people constantly having a go at the game.
He says that he knows none of the players, there are no superstars. I agree with that to a certain extent but I also don't really see why it matters so such. There are a lot of fantastic players in our game but I would say that people that don't know about the sport are looking at the game play on the field rather than specific names. If people like the game on the field then they will look into it more and learn about the great players. I like football but I don't watch it to see specific players, I watch it to see the game as a whole. A team sport is not about individuals.
He says crowds are dwindling. Again, I agree to a certain extent. They are at certain clubs but at others they are holding firm or even increasing. This is the same with other sports as well though. In football, a team in the premier league will get a full ground, they get relegated and the ground is half empty. If a team does well the casuals come to watch, if a team does rubbish they bugger off. Crowds are certainly a lot better now than they were, say 30 years ago. ( www.rugbyleagueproject.org/compe ... asons.html) compared to ( www.rugbyleagueproject.org/compe ... asons.html) and actually if you look at those super league crowd averages you will see that they haven't changed that much over the years.
He says there is less interest from broadcasters; just about every England game is shown on free to air tv these days (wouldn't have been just a few years ago) and more challenge cup is shown now than has ever been before on free to air. There has never been so much rugby league available on free to air tv or streamed for free as well.
Commercial partners; We might not have massive international companies sponsoring us but we have some decent sponsors, Betfred, Dacia, Specsavers, Patient Claim Line, Ladbrokes, these are all decent size national companies (Dacia actually worldwide). Would we have had an worldwide brand sponsoring our competitions in the past, no, we would have had beer or fags or something else stereotypically northern.
Our game is in a lot better position than it was just a decade ago, and a better position than Hearn makes out in the article in my opinion and with all the expansion going on at the moment surely it can continue to get better. Look at the amount of interest that has come from places wanting to host world cup games in 2021 for example, someone must be taking note of the game. These are exciting times for league and all people do is slag it off.

| Like it or not, the sport needs column inches and tv airtime. And like him or not, he gets his sports and his athletes infront of cameras, and finds a way to get bums on seats (including Thursday nights for Premier League darts).
RL needs to assess what it wants as a sport, does it want to be true to its roots and continue as a steady sport in established areas, or whether it wants to sell a little bit of soul for a bit of ‘theatre’ to pick up more fans and media interest.
It will divide opinion, like 20/20 cricket did at the start, but there’s an audience out there. It has to be worth negotiating a deal with him that is incentive based, giving him scope to earn a lot of money as a percentage if he delivers the objectives. I’d rather give him 50% of something than have the RFL keep 100% of nothing.

The old saying that no publicity is bad publicity.
Hearn (and certainly his father) are pretty good at getting publicity for the sport's/ people that they are involved with.
Seriously, can he be any worse than the ZERO publicity that SL is currently receiving and on the flip side, a certain Mr Wood had been involved in the sport for a long long time and there aren't too many praising his work at the helm of the sport.

You'll struggle to find anyone in the world of PR that genuinely subscribes to that theory. This media attention is good for Hearn, but RL simply comes across as a desperate and dying sport.
My point stands that Hearn is the wrong answer to the wrong question.
People are asking "who can save us?", when they should really be asking "what do we need to do to save ourselves?"
I'm not averse to anyone coming in with new ideas, but anyone coming into this sport today - including Hearn - would be hamstrung from day one by key stakeholders who aren't, and have little intention of, pulling their weight.

Certain clubs can do a lot more to promote themselves in the community and on match days

| If by "well written" you mean it criticizes Hearn whilst offering nothing constructive about how RL should promote itself.

| It's well written in that It puts things into perspective by highlighting the sheer challenge facing anyone who steps up to revolutionise rugby league, a worldwide team sport which exists not only on the big stage but at grass roots level, and how Hearn's strength lies in marketing events where an already high profile individual is the big draw. Hell, I think I could sell out an Anthony Joshua fight!
If I just wanted fantasist promotional ideas then I'd visit this forum.
