I think today the ref would call a 'surrender' rather than penalise it as a voluntary tackle, particularly in that situation where you don't want to call a penalty unless it is absolutely unavoidable. If memory serves, weren't they penalised more often in general around that time as well? Can't remember the last time I saw one given at SL level, they just use surrender instead.

| By the way I have tried to trace the original thread few times, I think a jumpy moderator must have deleted it from the site and all the backups too

I know that interpretations/Rules have changed over the years but IMO that was a dead set voluntary tackle and should have been penalised as such

| The funny thing is if Deacon doesn’t move out of way and tell Gilmore not to touch Joynt it is a voluntary tackle...the fact Joynt gets up and runs again makes it no different to if he had tripped and got back up. Rules around a voluntary tackle state the tackle has to be completed and that one never was due to nobody fully effecting it

| Watch any decent full back bringing the ball out of the in-goal area with a defence pushing up and you will see voluntary tackle after voluntary tackle. It irritates me when you see FB's getting driven back into the in goal area.

Slight difference, you get surrender tackles rather than voluntary. I reckon Frank Paul Nu'uasala must hold the Super League surrender tackle record.

| if you were trying to explain a voluntary tackle and wanted to show an example, this would be it, its a classic voluntary tackle, he's not trying to dive back int the field of play or avoid being dragged into touch, the just falls to the floor voluntarily.

possible so but bear in mind the ref may have given the mark so cant just offside juts on the position of the ref behind the players, whether bulls were offside or not the ref should have blown the whistle and either said offside or voluntary tackle but he just bottled it. if was defo a voluntary tackle everybody knows it and a bet Chris joint knows it, doubt he would admit it.

There is no difference, a tackle should be executed by a defender(s) not the guy with the ball. Slater dives out of the in goal onto the floor time and time again. Call it what you will.

Whether you don't see a difference is irrelevant, it exists in the application of the rules. Surrender tackle is diving at the players feet, who completes the tackle. or standing still and succumbing to the tackle. The ref calls 'surrender' and the defenders are rewarded with longer time to re-adjust their grip and control the tackle. A voluntary tackle is when the player plays the ball, with no tackle having been effected. The ref is basically backed into the call because generally the defenders will all otherwise be placed offside in this situation, as they won't have had an opportunity to retreat. It hardly ever/never happens at professional level, but I've seen it at lower levels.
I'd say if Joynt played the ball after initially hitting the floor, it should be penalised as a voluntary tackle. As it is, he stands up again and surrenders to the tackle by Gilmour, thus making it a surrender tackle. The ref should call 'surrender' and give Gilmour longer in the ruck and the opportunity to re-grip (no great advantage at that point in the game, granted).

| IMO he gets back up so it isn't a voluntary tackle. The bit where the Bulls were robbed was the Deacon disallowed try in the first half where video ref Kershaw later admitted he'd got it wrong.
