Although suffering from polio at the age of seven, he went to star for Salford in those heady days of the 70's. He started at Wian and is recorded as being jointly the first substitute for Wigan. He moved to Salford in 1967. He became captain of the team and, in 1974, captain of the Great British Lions tour of down-under.
