The regular rounds in League 1 are now complete (15 rounds), I thought it'd be a good time to take a look at the first few months of the Toronto club.
On the pitch they're blowing each team away as expected really, 15 from 15, having scored 916 and conceding just 157. Barrow & Whitehaven aren't too far behind though, so they can't afford to slip up in the Super 8's. They made a decent go against Salford, losing 29-22 in the Cup.
Attendances have been strong. They've averaged 6,639, with a record of 7,247 set at the weekend vs Hemel.
There's a lot of positivity amongst sports fans in Toronto regarding the Wolfpack. I stumbled on a poll from TSN 1050 on Twitter, asking fans what the biggest Summer sports story was in Toronto. If you read the comments, the thread is swamped by TW fans, annoyed that they weren't included in the poll, and all talking extremely positively about the match days. https://twitter.com/TSN1050Radio/status ... 0186343424
20k on Facebook, 17.5k on Twitter
They also recently handed a 3-year deal to what is effectively their first Canadian youngster, Quinn Ngawati. I think he's played a couple of times this year from the bench.
Lot's of things to be positive about IMO.

| On field - the real measure is starting now in the 8s. They will have sterner tests than they have faced almost all season and so how will they react...i hope they win promotion personally, it'll be good for the game in Canada and worldwide
Off the field they seen to be setting the gold standard in fan engagement and product marketing and making the game an "event" each time, plus links with local hostelries to provide coverage of away days to keep momentum up on those weekends
I wish my own club would take note

| Lets be honest, they have done unbelievably well and made the very best of a bad situation. It is typical that RL are looking such a gift-horse in the mouth and we can only hope that sanity prevails in the current discussions about structure.

They should be playing in their own Canadian league if they're so good. They don't benefit English RL at all.
They can take their bigger crowds and extra TV deal elsewhere, what English RL needs is Whitehaven in Super League.
They've been in the league for half a season now and the Canada team is still rubbish....WASTE OF TIME!

They've done well off the pitch, but I don't trust the RFL's competence to translate this into any benefit for the English game, or have come up with a plan for that when admitting them into the league (not TWP's problem).
They'll be tested on the pitch next season, and will be interesting to see if Rowley and Noble agree on things if they start to lose a few games.

| In fairness, its not all Leigh fans, nor only Leigh fans, unfortunately for them some of their empty vessels are the loudest.
But it has been interesting to see some of the myths Toronto have busted, the arguments about the 'fairness' of P+R and it being beneficial for the game as a whole have been thrown out of the window and it is now they are at least honest about their position being solely about self-preservation and self interest.
Toronto are about as clear evidence as you could wish to see that some people arent afraid of the games failure, they are terrified of its success.

I stopped watching a while back, their games are totally uncompetitive, I'll start watching again next season.
I think the big question is if they don't make it to Super League in 2018 or even 2019, how long will there backers be prepared to keep spending money to keep the dream alive, a transatlantic sports team can't be cheap. Hopefully Super League is expanded to 14 clubs in 2018, with 2 expansion clubs gaining promotion.

Will they be on Premier Sports next season as Sky have the rights to the Championship (assuming they're promoted of course)?

I fully expect a similar deal to Catalans to take place where all Toronto games are televised. There'll be loads of interest from SL viewers as well as each Championship team's fans not going across. Bigger viewing figures than standard Champ games, particularly as they'll kick off at 9:30pm or alike. Peak viewing period on a Saturday when football isn't on.

Yeah I guess it's pretty easy to just broadcast the Canadian feed for all their home games.

| 9pm saturday night would work out quite well in terms of time with Les Catalans at 6pm.
If we play our cards right and the NRL and RFL could get their heads together during the summer we could see Saturdays with games kicking off at 6pm in Auckland (4pm Sydney, 7am UK) 6pm Sydney (8pm Auckland, 9am UK) 8pm Sydney (10pm Auckland, 11am UK) 1pm UK (midnight Auckland, 10pm Sydney) 3pm uk (2am Auckland, midnight Sydney) 6pm france (5am Auckland, 3am Sydney) 8pm uk (7am Auckland, 5am Sydney) 5pm Toronto (10pm uk, 9am Auckland, 7am Sydney)
17hrs of live RL in a day, 8 games, and 5 of them (possibly 6 if sky scrapped the thursday night games) would already be being broadcast

Not really fair given the obvious connection between the clubs , if they or Montreal in 2019 decide to pillage say Cas of half their squad , I'm sure we'll see a similar dislike displayed

| You would have thought a sentence that included the words "its not all Leigh fans, nor only Leigh fans" would have have been clue enough.
Apparently not.

Leigh fans opinions mean little , if it's the fans you refer to , then I don't disagree , although I haven't seen many posts by any fans discussing the supposed changes to structure , personally I hope it doesn't change , I'm looking forward to the next 8/9 games

| It was fans i was talking about, though again not necessarily all leigh fans, nor only Leigh fans.
And we have seen the edifice that the argument for P+R was one for the wider interests fall away drastically and now it is as it always was. Self-preservation.
We have seen the argument that relegation drives crowds and interest disappear, we have seen the argument that standards would be driven from the bottom up disappear, we have seen the argument that clubs wouldnt return to damaging short-term thinking disappear, we are now starting to see resistance to the idea of a club building from the bottom up as Toronto have done.
As i said there is a large portion of the game not worried about its failure but terrified of its success. That growth might mean their club is left behind and therefor it is a bad thing even if it is good for the game as a whole

That ' large portion ' might well be from all parts of the Pro spectrum , the bigger clubs might have as much to lose as the smaller ones

| Me too, i kept premier sports on my subscription for the intrigue of the Toronto games but was bored silly by the 3rd or 4th so cancelled.
I wouldn't imagine anyone hadn't expected them to be 100% and cruising at this stage.

I suppose that's the problem created by putting them in League 1. They end up with a much better side than the rest, firstly because they can afford to, but they can't leave anything to chance either as they have to go straight up this year. They also have to plan ahead & ensure they have a squad able to compete at the top end of the Championship to save them rebuilding most of the side in the off season. The result of this is a lot of one sided matches.
