Following a review of both the Samoa Test and the first phase of Elite Performance Squad (EPS) sessions held between February and May, England Head Coach Wayne Bennett and his coaching staff have selected a 27-man squad for the second phase of the season.
After a successful mid-season trip to Sydney which saw England beat a strong Samoan side in Campbelltown 30 -10 as part of their Rugby League World Cup preparations, three EPS squad meetings will be held between June and September enabling players and staff to reflect on phase one, benefit from guest speakers, strengthen relationships and work closely on the World Cup programme.
A recent inclusion in England’s preparation plans is a warm-up game in Perth – where the squad will be based pre-World Cup - against an Affiliated States side made up of players from Western Australia, Victoria, South Australia and the Northern Territory. The game will be played at nib Stadium on Friday, October 20.
Four new faces have been called up into Bennett’s EPS squad including Betfred Super League’s leading try-scorer, Castleford Tigers’ winger Greg Eden, his team-mate Paul McShane and St Helens duo Tommy Makinson and Alex Walmsley, who wasn’t selected during phase one but did make the 19-man squad for the mid-season Test.
England secured a solid 30-10 win over Samoa in May
The new EPS will meet up three times before the World Cup
On the Elite Performance Squad, Bennett, said: “The total number of the squad has been reduced but that’s not to say that the door isn’t open.
“Myself and staff are monitoring and watching players every week – we ask them to do their best for their club, improve as a player and work on the little things that will have a big difference come October.
“The 13 Super League players that travelled over for the Samoa Test have been included again; I want them to share their experiences with other members of the squad. It was an extremely positive and productive camp which resulted in an impressive display.
“I mentioned this straight after the Samoa game, but from the team I left after the Four Nations last year to the squad I’m seeing now, there is a lot of confidence in the group and individuals which is very pleasing ahead of the World Cup.”
England Rugby League Elite Performance Squad:
Greg Eden (Castleford Tigers)
Luke Gale (Castleford Tigers)
Zak Hardaker (Castleford Tigers)
Mike McMeeken (Castleford Tigers)
Paul McShane (Castleford Tigers)
Michael Shenton (Castleford Tigers)

| It's a 27 man squad that doesn't include any NRL players. It's a bit irrelevant who is named at this stage.

| Ryan Hall over Ben Jones-Bishop is also a joke. Hall got caught by a second rower against Wire and he had 10 yards start. No recognition of form there whatsoever.

| There's no wonder why some clubs struggle to keep hold of players & attendances for Internationals are poor.

This season you have Mcshane and Hodgson who are outperforming DH and Clark is a much more potent attacking threat. Is that enough of a reason not to pick him?

| Thankyou..I've had this with a fair few pals who follow the dark path . Only player who plays 80 in middle of park. Mainly 2nd and 3rd man in tackle so will always be top tackler proved even more so by his position in tackle charts after first season with injury.apparently he missed no tackles at magic but I counted at least 3?distribution is average at best compared to top hookers but his engine and heart are bigger than the man.his scoots are good and kicking better than most hookers. Great club man and his tackle on Currie will be remembered for a long time .is he better than Mcshane? For me yes.but better than Hodgson or Clark? No..

| Lomax I agree.Hall has been quality at international level same as Mcgillvary. Eden Scoring for fun and maybe his Australian jaunt has got his defense sorted?Shaul? Poor season so far.plenty of speed, average under high ball.suspect attitude but yes I'd take a punt on him above Lomax. Hardaker looks class apart in speed skill and size and defense.tbf look a bit weak at full back

| Why is Johnny Lomax in the squad? He has played few games, and is about to be replaced by Ben Barba at St Helens.

| Ryan Hall consistently puts in top performances at international level. Hall, Graham, Hill and S.Burgess should go in the side pretty much regardless of whether they are in form at club level IMO, because we know they perform for England.

Shaul?
I'm a Hull fan and Shaul is nowhere near international level. He's had a poor year by his standards, and has zero creativity/handling ability.
Also, Hall has proven time and time again that he's a big game player on the International stage. Until he has a bad game for England it's his shirt to lose.

Yep, it gets boring making this point to those advocating the latest form horse as a better option but i still fail to see anyone in SL right now who could be trusted to do a better job at that level, The guy scores at the rate of a try a game and carries the ball back to great effect, what more do people want FFS?

I think the international game suits some players more than others. For example, Hall, Crabtree and Westwood all looked far better for England than they did for their clubs, whereas Watkins, Charnley and Sinfield looked worse. Possibly a size thing.

| Strange balance to that squad. 25/27 players from just 5 SL clubs & 5 clubs with no representation at all, including 2 of the current top 4.
In contrast 13/16 NRL clubs were represented in Origin yesterday & in the last game it was all 16.

| The phrasing is performance squad which is bizarre because you've got Eden and McShane no international experience but domestically performing well, yet you have Brown, Clark and Cooper who've all been e p, then there's Lomax, Currie, Bateman who've hardly if at all played this year.

To be fair, Origin is 34 players so you will have more of a spread of players.
But I do agree, there's certainly a favouritism towards certain clubs and has been for some time despite the poor performances and form of said players.

Wayne Bennett picked the squad. He's only been in charge 2 minutes.

Seeing as Warrington are on sky nearly every week it makes the decisions to pick players from them even more laughable
