| £12,600,000 to Rugby Union - surprise surprise
£8,290,000 to Table Tennis - What !!!
£5,612,000 to Football - Like they need a cash injection
£0,000,000 to Rugby League
Really !!!!
Is this not the list of sports that Johnny Vagas was having a pop at in his advert.
"We will show Johnny" I can imagine Sports England saying to themselves

| The press release said that sports not shown on this list will have their funding announced in March 17, so unless you know that RL is getting zero then its a none story.

| If you're not an olympic sport you don't get sh*t, apparently.
In all seriousness though it wasn't that long ago where RL actually lost its sport england funding was it?
I can definitely remember it happening but can't remember the exact reasons why.
Edit: found it, we lost the funding for failing to meet participation targets.

| I'm sure if the game gets Zero funding, Nigel Wood will spin it out as if we are the sport that got the most cash.

Wasn't it originally £30 million we were awarded. It was a huge sum. In normal organisations, heads would have rolled for losing such a substantial amount of funding.

2013-2017 RL was awarded £22m in that Sport England cycle, which I believe ends in March.
In total, Sport England awarded £493m of funding across 46 sports.
The next round up to March 2021, is worth £189m in total (£88m announced in Dec, £101m announced this week), so substantially less at the moment following their new strategy released in May16 in-line with what the Government have requested.
Difficult to blame the RFL too much when you see that the pot is less than 40% of what it was, and there's a completely new strategy being rolled out by Sport England/the Government.

IIRC participation has fallen amongst plenty of sports. I may be wrong on this but I think they changed the criteria on which it was judged too and the figures are only for age 16+ which doesn't help RL currently where attempts have been focussed on increasing child participation.
We're also hamstrung by the regional nature of the sport. I'm looking down the list of sports and struggling to find a sport as "regional" as RL. We have pockets of relatively high participation and then areas of no participation at all. I'm sure that this will impact on RL's national figures too.
When RL "lost" its Sport England money IIRC it wasn't due to a fall in participation it was due to it not meeting targets for increased participation. RL was no different to many sports in this regard following the rise and then fall of sporting participation after the Olympics.
Also the oft-maligned move from GB to England was for the Sport England money.
What the figures do show though is how few people in the country are involved in RL. Something which hamstrings the sport in my opinion. We need our version of 5-a-side football. We need Social Rugby we're virtually anyone can take part regardless of fitness, ability or unwillingness to get in a fight. There are some efforts to increase Touch Rugby which is great but they're pretty half-assed efforts at the moment. Touch Rugby is the way forward in my opinion but the sport has to properly get behind it at all levels and provide the funding and facilities for it to thrive. Just sticking some people on a random field on a Wednesday night with a couple of cones and a ball isn't good enough. We need the clubs to properly get behind it and make their facilities available. Same goes for the bigger amateur clubs. We need a social rugby league of touch rugby teams setup by workplaces/pubs/groups of friends and places where individuals can just turn up.
Only then will we increase participation post age 16.

Rugby league grass roots is on its arris. No one is interested in playing it. Something needs to be done. Its easy to blame it on todays culture of facebook and playstations, that kids would rather sit at home, but rugby union is absolutely booming at grass roots so we cant use that excuse. I dont have the answer though.

| Align the amateur seasons again, playing amateur rugby is hard now, especially as there is a winter season and a summer season, there arent enough players for both seasons so people are losing interest in one or the other as games are cancelled, less team in the division etc.

Also add to that the absolute tooth-pulling exercise of funding and running junior teams - with a league structure that seems hellbent on preventing rather than enabling kids to get on the field. And that's entirely aside from the angry dad culture that permeates some clubs - making them singularly unattractive to many families who might otherwise support their kids involvement.

| There are more hoops to jump through, looking at the Sport England Governance requirements for individual ruling bodies to maximise your funding.
Diversity, both at board level and throughout the organisation.
Increased transparency & accountability.
Avoiding/minimising conflicts of interest.
Safety.
Corruption - ie Working with WADA, also betting.
I think the RFL scores well on some of those things, but needs major changes to fulfil others...

A competitive, regular International calendar, with England players on central contracts.
A large geographical footprint at elite (Superleague) level.
Massive increases in participation at all ages and abilities.
A clear strategy about how they want to grow the sport.
None of which RL has.
Netball is being played at larger venues than ever before, is in the process of moving from amateur to semi pro/professional and televised across Sky and the BBC.
There's an awful lot our governing body can learn from what Netball have done/are doing.
It's no longer a game played by schoolgirls on a playground basically.

| Yes we do need to find our ' 20/twenty cricket ' or our ' 7 s Rugby ' , but when you do that you stop being RL , our sport has a basic fundamental problem , it is too tough , so how do you change that mindset ?
Plus we have to be careful what we do actually produce , as all too often Union will happily nick it from under our noses as they have tried with ' Tag '
I doubt we will ever be able to draw Sport England funding of significant amounts ever again

"usually" infers that I have mentioned raising the salary cap on quite a few occasions when the reality is I've mentioned it once by saying I feel it's too low. But please don't let facts get in the way of your constant need to try and get one up on me. Since you mentioned the salary cap, can you name another sport where the athletes earn less now than they did 10 years ago once you factor In inflation? Snooker maybe? Apart from that?
