They've asked for a name change, which has been done, UAE Rugby League to Rugby League Commission. Same for Touch Rugby. No big deal

Bloody Puntmonkies! And then you'll get the usual crowd, demanding London "merge" with an Onion club etc etc et al!

Surely the rlif should have had the sport registered as an official sport with UAE authorities before a competition started?

Union are scared of leagues potential, as they should be. Their product is an inferior version and they know it.

I do wonder if it is time RL cut all ties with"rugby" and globally rebranded as a totally different sport. Maybe something like "league football". Would get rid of the confusion, cut the rugby union blockades off at the knees, help with things like Olympic recognition etc radical but maybe time for Rugby League to cast off its inferior cousin?

Like I said on another forum, I think league football would be just as confusing to the reader of a sports column.

Get rid of rugby and get rid of foot. Leagueball. Easy!

How can they own the word rugby when our sport is called rugby league?

They say that their sport is rugby, and that rugby league is just another code of rugby like 7's or touch. They convince governments that RL is just a different version of their sport of rugby (similar to 20/20 cricket), rather than a unique sport.

I agree with the posters above that we really need to move away from the "rugby" name, some of those suggestions are terrible though, "leagueball", really?

Isn't Rugby a name, both of a town and a surname, so the minute some chap picked up a ball at a public school (something the Upards and Downards in Derbyshire had been doing for centuries, and others in a great many other towns/villages too for that matter), the name "Rugby" became the personal property of the "Union" (an ironic name given the class it tends to represent).

No, we should challenge it in court in a different manner, we should find a couple of folk with the surname Rugby and sponsor them to challenge the UAE Unions' assertion that only it can decide what can be called Rugby!
