London – Fresh New Start Or Same Old Struggles? Some things seem to remain constant in Super League. Hull FC are the perennial under achievers, Leeds season comes alive in the play-offs where as Warrington’s goes to pot, and then there are the trials and tribulations of the London Broncos.
Once more the talk about the Capital’s only professional Rugby League club has been unsurprisingly negative given the precarious position they have found themselves in over the close season. One in which their very existence was threatened like never before with no home ground or training facility to use, a threadbare playing roster and back room staff.

| One (of many) issues with London is that 'London' is too broad an area of population to be - in the medium to long-term - the actual goal anyway. In RL dreamland, what we'd like in London in, say, 20 years from now is several London clubs. For that reason, I'd actually rather it was Barnet Broncos (London Borough of Barnet, pop. 357,500 ) than London Broncos.
I suppose the argument goes something like "well there's not enough interest in RL down there, so to have any hope of good crowds we have to cover a massive catchment area with the single name, 'London' ".
But that argument doesn't work for me - if we hoovered up Wigan, Saints, Warrington into "North West [whatever" you wouldn't automatically get big crowds just because you'd broadened the catchment area. At the other end of the scale, you're always going to have a challenge with tiny catchment areas such as Cas - and I've always (admittedly without the emotional burden of a personal history in the area) seen the logic of merging Whitehaven and Workington, but somewhere like Barnet, even though the actual Borough has only about 350k in it, is probably capable of addressing at least 1 million people who would be capable of calling it their 'local' club.

| London are virtually trying to achieve the impossible..they haven't got a 100 years of history and generations of supporters were RL is ingrained into the mindset..
trying to get support in one of the most competetive areas in the world for sport, never mind soccer means they are up against it. Throw in a massively diverse cultural society where RL is unheard of from their backgrounds & to get to anywhere near a finacially sustainable AND competitive SL club isn't do-able in 10 years, never mind if you are always moving from one place to another and run by an incompetent fool..

To be fair Tony Rea has promised several more key signings, so if that pans out then it was not the full team for London.
Fact of the matter is that the London defence is appalling, and unless that changes the club's season is finished. You cannot afford to have a non-tackler like Kieran Dixon in the team if the other 16 players are also weak defensively.
Buying a full back who doesn't seem to like to tackle looks like a very bad decision.

Why bring up Dixon when he didn't even play in the game?

I was making a more general point about the London team. With Dixon as a first choice winger, because of his attacking skills, the team is carrying a liability in defence. Most teams in the NRL would not take on that burden, no matter how potent an attacker a player is, but if a team does, it needs to know that a non-tackler can be "carried" by having competent defenders in all other positions to make up for him.
London showed in the game against Leeds that there are many poor defenders in the team that played. I don't know how that can be rectified other than by finding (buying?) replacements who are competent defenders. If that doesn't happen then London, with several weak defenders in the team, are going to be walloped every week by every other team.

| Our squad is packed full of kids. I'm all for giving youngsters a go, but the average age is probably around 21 or 22. Of the more experienced players, Cook is a solid forward who won't set the world on fire, Moore is a mercurial character who might set something on fire, and Slyney is a fringe NRL player. We look terribly lightweight in the forwards and need an established leader.
