Spot fixing relies on one individual having an excessive amount of control over what he or his team is doing at any given point.

A bowler in cricket is in complete control of the game at the time he has the ball in his hand, so it is easy for him to influence what goes on (such as bowling a no-ball to order). In football, it is not difficult for a footballer to make a slide tackle that earns him a card and it's not difficult for a tennis player to throw a set or serve a double fault.

I can't think of many cases where an RL player is in that much control, other than potentially a goal kicker who could, theoretically, miss a kick by order of a betting syndicate (which would make such a bet more likely in union that RL) and possibly making a high tackle to order. I would think that any other type of 'spot fix' would be very difficult without the involvement of several players on the same team which, one would hope, would blow the scam's cover.

As for whether lower paid sportsmen are more affected, I'm not that sure. Matt Le Tissier wasn't on a pittance and he admitted to being involved in spot fixing.

I remember reading that last summer an investigation was launched into Workington following their defeat to Gateshead, I can only presume nothing came of it?

As Bramleyrhino says it's much harder to affect things in RL than in other sports. It's pretty easy to get yourself a yellow card in football for instance yet is quite hard in RL. You could get yourself sent off quite easily I suppose but only by doing something very blatantly stupid and probably dangerous to another player.
Plus I would imagine the total betting (and therefore the amount to be gained through match/spot fixing) is lower than most of the other sports, especially football.
Doesn't mean we as a sport shouldn't be vigilant though and investigate potential incidents.

I'm no expert on this, but isn't the spot fixing issue mainly from Asia. Over here it is very hard to bet on isolated incidents such as yellow cards in football or no balls in cricket. In Asia these markets exist. I can't see RL even registering in Asia and as the above posters say, it's very hard to get in RL to get certain incidents to happen. E.G getting yourself sin binned.

Well if that's the case then I'd suggest that the forum be closed down, since any direct inference to any players could be "liable" i.e. linking rumors/speculation of transfer activites, bans / suspensions etc.

If you think out of the box I am sure certain things could be bet on. First scrum. First penalty First knock on etc etc. it's not all about scores and cards from the ref. If you are the one who kicks off you can easily kick the ball dead from ko. This first penalty. A prop who is often first receiver from ko can knock on.
Equally as each game now has a visible clock you could transgress at a particular time. By saying its difficult to do is potentially denying it can occur.

The Asian market may well be an area that does not know about RL but equally that doesn't mean it wouldn't appeal.
I do agree though that the rewards might not be so great as football but it's all relative at the end of the day.

Footy refs have have been caught doing this sort of thing (although if my memory serves me right Brian Clough was furious that Nottingham Forest got the rough end of an Anderlecht stick due to a ref and there have been a couple in recent years with dodgy pens being awarded with a German ref getting a life ban IIRC). Wonder if our refs could be tempted? Here that the badger's arms in Oldham does a rather good pint for those who could help secure SL status to the town's team.
