Bear with me here...
The Canadian Football League has clearly decided that the best strategy for expansion is to target an area with road games.
Now, would this be an appropriate strategy here too? (If you scrapped Magic Weekend, I'm sure it would) Get 3 or 4 SL teams to take a home game to a large urban area across a summer, and see what the reaction is. Even better, make it a double header with the nearest semi-pro or conference team.
As an example- 2014. Get Wigan, Saints and Leeds (let's be frank, the best-known teams to a non-RL fan) to play a game each in a major urban centre not too far off the heartland- Birmingham, Nottingham, that kind of place. Get teams like Wire, Widnes, Salford playing in Stoke-on-Trent; get FC, KR, or some such playing in Newcastle, Middlesbrough. Don't just do it as a one-off, do it as a concerted effort over several years if needs be. If it doesn't work, drop it- but surely testing the water is a good way to achieve expansion, rather than just plunging in.
What do you all think?

| Superb idea, let the games be well promoted, fairly priced, and choose good grounds and it's a winner. I think double-headers would be a superb idea too. Pivot the season around a few showpiece games, as double headers.

Gateshead v wigan @ tynecastle
Halifax v sheffield @northampton
Hull v hudds @ gateshead
Just three locations i remember, some football teams may not want rugby played at their grounds

| Prior to the chimp currently running London being employed, London played OTR games between 1998 and 2005 on 9 occasions...with an average attendance of 4,962 per game. This is 1,208 more than the average attendance for London in the SL era and shows that when games are taken on the road, the "locals" do turn out. Said chimps average for on the road games is a paltry 3,270 which he claims as a sign of success
The flip side to this is that 13 SL clubs do actually play one game a year near a rather large urban and the fans don't seem that bothered about turning up ....
..as some have said, it comes down to how much marketing you're prepared to pay for up front!

| Souths play a home game in Perth next week, the Bulldogs play at home in Mackay next week as well. These are both return trips. We only have to look at our own game to see this in action. Realistically Perth have a great shot at getting back in to top level League in the next few years.

Lets take Leeds vs Wigan to Birmingham. All the locals will forget life long ties to Villa or BCFC and start watching RL.
If that's not what the OP was getting at please enlighten us all .....

Because 100% of people in Birmingham are life-long fans of footbal teams. And of those 100% not 1 person would maybe follow two sports.

All? It appears to be only you struggling with the concept of trying to introduce new audiences to the sport. I think most people would suggest areas where there is already an RL presence even if only small. I would say Nottingham has potential along with some of the new clubs admitted into Championship 1.

| Yes games need to be taken on the road. The NRL takes games to Perth, Adelaide and Cairns and I think its crazy that no top league SL game has been taken to Bristol for instance when a world cup game is being held down there.

| Tbh, the game in its present state needs to put expansion ideas on the back burner for now. We've got dropping crowds and clubs skirting financial ruin to address first. Not to mention a governing body that has come up with new ideas for the league that are analogous to monkeys flinging their poop at each other.
That's. of to say I don't want to see the game expand, far from it. However, when the foundations of your house are crumbling, that is not the best time to start start building a new conservatory on the side.

Listing one example 15 years ago is hardly an example of why something will never work. I think the tactic they used in 1998 wasn't the best (one round of fixtures played in random locations with no reason why they were there). I think if they were looking to build up interest in an area, they should stick to one place and spread the fixtures over the year.
Just some other examples of on the road games:
2013 - 15,000 in Toulouse (Catalans vs Hull KR)
2009 - 18,000 in Barcelona (Catalans vs Warrington)
1999 - 9,000 in Leicester (London vs Bradford)
1998 - 7,000 in Edinburgh (London vs Bradford)
1998 - 9,000 in Swansea (Saints vs Wigan)
And in 1998, your game against Wire at Cardiff Arms Park attracted 4,431. Your home game against Wire that same year attracted 4,130.

I didn't all him dumb, I asked if he was HTH
FWIW - try it every 15 years from now until the year 3000, taking a game to Plymouth (eg) and thinking the public will magically love our sport forever is ridiculous.
Some people on here can't grasp the fact others don't like the same sport they do and never will.

Are we talking about Castleford or Wales?
When Cas aren’t playing in a hole in front of 5 men and his dog they can lecture other teams on playing in front of 3 men and his dog.

There can be as much 'interest' as you want but until that translates to people in the stands and pounds in the pocket its irrelevant.

To also show that sometimes expansion doesnt work.. The CFL decided on expansion in the early 90's into American cities that didnt have NFL teams.. It was a major flop as the people in america didnt want to watch Canadian Football (Very similar game to NFL with a bigger pitch of 110 yards and only 3 down to make 10 yards instead of 4).
The point is that its all well and good saying we have teams in X and Y cities but if no-one is interested then they simply wont watch it.
The CFL eventually scrapped the American teams and kept the game in Canada (Where Canada read M62 corridoor) where even tho its not as well known around the world the people of Canada love the game and have it it their hearts.
