NRL viewing figures are better than AFL on Pay TV, but there is going to be a resurrection of the 24 hr TV Channel for AFL called FOX FOOTY CHANNEL. I just saw the ads on telly.
Can someone explain to me why? How? I really don't get it.

I think it's about selling more subscriptions to new people...I could be wrong, but I really can't think of any other reason for it.

It was part of the New TV deal...maybe the AFL requested it.......and if so, maybe the same request could be made by the IC when they get around to the TV deal for League.

| Foxtel gets massive ratings off the NRL anyway, If a NRL channel didn't cost them anything they'd probably do it.

| During the winter Fox 1 is practically a fumbleball channel anyway. About 23 hours a day they show it. At least now it will be segregated on a specialist channel that will be easier to ignore. Ideally it will be an extra and people can make a point of not buying it, though I'm sure the AFL mafia will ensure it's not. Hopefully the space on Fox's normal channels that used to be devoted to the fumblers can be at least partially taken up by more RL.

| They're going to have to talk their fumbleball channel up if Channel 10 buy ALL eight NRL games.

The future of the channel was placed in doubt after the awarding of the AFL rights from 2007 to the Seven Network and Network Ten. On 23 August 2006, Foxtel announced the Fox Footy Channel would cease broadcasting at the conclusion of the current AFL season and be replaced with Fox Sports 3. Foxtel CEO Kim Williams stated "It's not financially viable to continue operating a 24-hour-a-day (Australian rules) football channel when we can only get three live games a week and not on the terms we have sought."

| IIRC about 90% of the 'content' was old matches (80s 90s etc, not the last week), and mostly meaningless mid-season fixtures at that. The problem with showing that sort of thing is that even the most fanatical supporter won't tend to hang around and watch a game between two clubs they don't care about from years ago. Even AFL fans I know said they rarely watched anything except for the current games. And how many people would want to watch games from last week, or two weeks ago?
If you expand programming to include all the week's AFL fixtures, you've still got a heck of a lot of dead airtime to fill, unless you repeat games constantly.

Without returning this forum to its past era's.......it really isn't a RL story....just an AFL baiting opportunity....

| Foxtel won't be taking any financial risk at all on this channel. What's the extra cost to them compared to showing documentaries on pandas? A few presenters. If ratings don't hold up they'll can it. Again.

| It's not about ratings par se, it is about marketing so that they can increase their currently low subscriptions in Vic, WA and SA.

| The pay TV take up in Vic is only 8% behind NSW. Some people rave about how much NSW and Qld subscribe compared to the other states, but 8% is nothing. Another afl myth busted.
I think I read something a few years ago saying the fox afl channel was losing 25 million a year or something, so what does fox do? Give them another channel and a bag full of money to go with it
