| What is this obsession with being 'world class'? Can Sam Tomkins' standing in the game not be explained in other ways, or like the boy passing through the tree to become a man, does he need to fall in the category of world class before he truly makes it? Also, world class has now been defined by somebody in soccer as 'getting in to a world XI', I mean that was just somebody's theory and it has been adopted by all as fact.
John Kear - there are many adjectives to use when a player makes a good play in the international game. Not every single facet of the game needs to be judged on whether it is world class. World class pass, world class dummy, world class vision...not a world class kick. And it is infectious, it seemed the whole bbc commentary team were using this as a barometer. This term must now rank as trite as every Australian sportsperson beginning their replies in interviews with 'yeh look'.

| Not sure it's bitter at all, it was aimed at the poor standard of commentating which surely no one can argue against. It's light years behind what Ray Warren etc have to offer.
It's about time our commentators were from a professional background who can talk positively about game rather a 'jobs for the boys culture' who focus on the negatives - eddie and Stevo with the National Anthems in France a few weeks back being an example.
If RU Commentators can talk positively about their game for over 80 mins then our commentators should have an easy ride, yet still negativity creeps in. A tpical Rugby League trait unfortunately.

You obviously watch the NRL with sound off - Warren and Gould are far more critical of events on and off the field than Sky ever are. As for the footie show they will tackle the controversial issues head on unlike boots and all who just sweep them under the carpet. At least on the red button the guys on the BBC are prepared to discuss some of the less nice stuff.

| Only Gould will speak in a negative vibe but everything he says has a purpose and end product. It's not a random moan for the sake of it.

| Very harsh to suggest Kear's vocabulary isn't all it might be. He described Tomkins' play as "sensational" at least 16 times.

Thank you Nick! I absolutely was making a point about the over usage of 'world class'. I used Sam Tomkins as an example yesterday of a player that's in a position of being a potential legend of the game, but we can't truly call him that until he becomes world class and we must judge where he is in the game on that barometer it would seem.
There was not a single ounce of bitterness in my post, I just used him as the example as he was referred to the most against this 'world class' system. In England colours I was fully behind him yesterday and supportive, I think he is the best player on our shores and should have won man of steel, he was also the best player on the park yesterday and I think he already is world class for the record, so those calling me bitter please re-examine my point.

Nope - Warren is negative about virtually everything, from the minute the game starts to the final whistle.

| Tomkins is world class. The stuff he does nearly every week moves him into the genius category. He may not have been around long, and nobody suggests he is perfect or anything like that, but he's got skills that are rare, produces them regularly, and as if to prove, produced them against the world's best, despite being in a beaten team.
he might get better, he may become a legend, or he may go to yawnion or get injured and never play again. Neither of the latter will remove the world class talent he has regularly displayed.

Is the use of adjectives within the commentary process really that upsetting? First World problems overload.
