Is it the BBC cameras or the stadium itself that results in one side of the pitch being too bright and the other being in near complete darkness ?

It was the quality of the broadcast. I sent a stinging email to the BBC because some of it was garbage. Why stick with wide shot that the cameras they were using couldn't handle. There are cameras that can do it bit they weren't the ones. Very bad effort by the BBC. 4/10.

Very slightly OT but i thought that yesterdays game was being broadcast in HD, whilst it was on the BBC1 HD channel the quality was awful

I have to agree with the OP - the quality was poor and the transition from light to shade when the cameras changed was positively jarring.
I'm sure the sun shines on the games that are broadcast by Sky in much the same way that it did on this one, so my unqualified conclusion is that the cameras or the technicians operating them were at fault.
Unless of course God did it on purpose, because he hates Sam Tomkins too.
