Lots of schools rugby around these days and it definately needs more support. I've watched both a Yr 10 and Yr 8s emerging schools matches in the last week. Schools form Manchester/Trafford/east Lancs/Bury etc. all playing and all from areas you wouldnt associate with rugby league - just a bit of insight can be found here: www.pitchero.com/clubs/burybronc ... _id=313228 - neither of these Bury schools used to play at all. |

My eldest is playing in the nationals next week in Hindley, Wigan for a chance to make it to the schools finals weekend.
I believe the girls at every year group from Castleford High school have got through to the nationals which is outstanding yet again.

rugby league is taken very seriously at castleford high,this years yr 7 boys have narrowly missed out on wembley losing in their semi final 22-20 against south leeds.the girls in castleford just seem to go from strength to strength and huge praise must also go to the girls coach`s at castleford panthers where most of the high school girls have learnt their trade. |

IIRC the RL set up at GSAL has just started out after a new PE teacher or something. Was always a Union school up until late.

GSAL,formally LGS,was always a RU playing School,but now RU is limited to the first term and football is played in the second term - previously always RU.Frankly,they are good at most sports,including golf - Colin Montgomery attended for his last 2 yrs - squah,ski ing,basketball,athletics,swimming etc.
Mike Lamb,was a former Headboy and subsequently P.E./geography Master,who played RU for Yorks and turned to RL with Leeds in the mid 70's.He went on to play for Bradford Northern at Wembley.Unfortunately,he died around 10yrs ago.Andrew Staniland was a former pupil in the mid 70's who played for both Headingley and Roundhay,before turning to Leeds RL late on - his father Arthur,used to play for Bramley.David Caplan,the full England RU full back of the early 80's,was also a pupil and was offered the chance to turn pro with Leeds RL,but stuck with RU.

NW Emerging Schools Yr 8 comp - won by Bolton School which is a private school - www.pitchero.com/clubs/burybronc ... _id=318376
They were greatly helped by having a really good hooker who it turned out played at Orrell St. James. |
