Assuming this is right, www.mediaspy.org/report/2011/04/ ... fl-rights/
we can assume that Ch9. Ch10 and Foxtel will all be bidding big for NRL rights. And that's not forgetting Ch7 who may well bid for some of the rugby league rights.
Logically, this means that the NRL will have a substantial increase in the tv deal, and therefore in the salary cap.
Good news in that it may mean a reduction in overseas players in SL, but we could also be losing far more of our best players as well.
As for SL tv negotiations, I'm reasonably upbeat. As a "product" (horrible phrase) the SL is terrific. I don't think ESPN will push the boat out to beat Sky but they may poke their toe in the water to keep Sky honest in the negotiations. We're never going to get the kind of deal that Union can achieve because of demographics, but I still anticipate an increase overall.
The product with the biggest problem is the CC because it garners quite low audiences and the BBC is stoney broke. We'll prob hear the usual RLFans guff about ITV, Ch4 and Ch5 being desperate to bid, but the reality is that the BBC only covers the CC because it's a public service. No commercial FTA broadcaster in the UK is going to touch it because it doesn't rate highly enough to be worth the effort. Possibly we need to start thinking outside the box about the CC. Does it need to change its format? But to what?
I'd also love to know what the broadcasters really say in the negotiations. Do they insist on a London side? Do they want a second French side? Do they care about a Welsh side? My instinct is yes to all three, but it's never spelled out. in truth, I suspect they don't care hugely either way because sadly the Greatest Game will always be a profitable little filler for the broadcasters compared to football.

| Unfortunately we don't have the same calibre of person involved over here. It's more a case of Sky saying, "Here is your deal, no one else has bid..." and the RFL saying, "Okay, thank you".

| Well, I think the agreements involving the Sponsor may indeed see a larger package for RL in this country. I would think a second deal involving ESPN could be in the offing, but I would like to see SL remain on one channel. The Challenge Cup is a big one. Groups leave to many dead-rubber games.

| The best thing for the game is for the Beeb to lose the highlights package, I'd be willing to take less money from ITV/Channel 4 if they guarentee to show it at a reasonable time to the whole country. Short term pain for long term gain and all that

I'm afraid that the naivety that RLFans tend to come out with. The BBC currently pay precisely zero for the highlights rights (apart from the play-offs). ITV, 4 + 5 have been offered the highlights since 1999, but simply aren't interested. If the SLS (which is admittedly a very poor effort in recent years) had ever gained an audience, the BBC would have given it a decent slot by now. I'm sure the makers of the show would argue that it's impossible to get an audience without a reliable slot, but I suspect that's a self serving argument. In reality, though many RL fans can't afford Sky, there are plenty who can. As such they don't really care about highlights on FTA. Without them, the audience share for the FTA highlights aren't enough to make the broadcasters care.
The only slight caveat I'd make, is that if the BBC lose out on EPL rights (highly unlikely because they're throwing everything they have left at it), BBC Sport would have some spare cash to spend. My understanding is that the BBC is willing to give up 6N to ITV in order to fund a competitive bid to preserve MotD. ITV want 6N because it attracts a wealthier punter and therefore advertiser. ITV would take EPL highlights if they can get them without paying through the nose like they did when they last had the rights, but they won't make that mistake again.

| Moving the SLS about so frequently will obviously have a detrimental by shifting it, almost constantly. But I guess it reflects the BBCs attitude to the game.
I'm surprised the likes of ITV haven't picked up a highlights as outside ITV's primary channel, it don't recall them having a regular ratings winner.
There must be plenty of RL fans who can afford Sky, seeing as SL is second only to football for viewing figures.
The fundamental issue underlining all this, is the sport here doesn't compare in popularity in this country.

| I think the way forward for English RL TV rights is to split it into 2; say the "main" package which is Friday & Saturday SL and a second package which is the Thursday Championship game and a Sunday afternoon Super League game.

Is this actually true ? If it is based on weekly viewing figures of individual games not once this season has RL been the second ranked sport. In terms of aggregate viewing figures it is certainly behind more sports than football.

I would suggest that most people would thoroughly disagree with that statement!
At best it is treat with lip service!!!
If they did treat RL with respect then the SL show ( only 30-45 minutes long) would be shown nationally at the same time as the "north".
That fact alone should show the "thinking" of the beeb.

About 4 years ago the "World" club chalange pulled in 160k viewers, two weeks later 2.5 million watched the first round of the CC on BBC. Snooker has more viewers than SL.

I think you may be in the minority of one on that point.
ITV2 has two regular programmes, I am sure there could be scope for an additional regular programme. As for what it would bring, regular viewers with a known demographic.
I am going off the comments made by the RFL.

Yes that's pretty much how it will probably go. Three weeks ago Sky renewed their broadcast deal for the Football League and because there were no other bidders they reduced the money on offer by 25% (from £264m to £195m) and also demanded an extra 33% of output (from 75 games per season to 100). I would not be at all surprised if the same happens with our deal.

True and because of this I reckon we will receive less money than the current deal.
It's a pity that we can't market the game properly and other backers may come into the bidding rights.

This is where the split in the game exposes our weakness in negotiation, Sky losing 50,000 subscribers overnight would make them think.
