i think most of us have known for a few years that he was going to be a good winger when he finally broke through, but who else is surprised at just how good he has been?
i know its still early days for jerry yet and i hope he doesn't become another kevin penny which im sure he wont.
who remembers the fuss and orgasmic reaction from the media over penny when he first broke into the warrington side? well compare this:
penny scored 13 tries in his first 12 games
jerry has scored 14 in his first 11 games
and yet i haven't heard sky or anyone else mention him yet penny was lauded as the nextmajor superstar in our game.
do you think this is good for jerry and the giants or just media bias?

It's small team mentality making a thread about an average winger in a good team.

Said when he played for Barrow last season and we got knocked out the Cup that McGillvary would be a class winger. Really impressed me.

actually its a thread about another young exciting winger making a great start to his professional career and what people's thoughts were on the lack of media fawning over him compared to the last great exciting winger that came through.

josh charnley scored 2 tries today too against hull fc, don't see any wigan posters bigging him up

It was also not only the number of tries but the way he scored them. I haven't seen all of "Jerry's" tries, but I bet they are nowhere near as eye-catching as Penny's.

Richards scored 29 in 27 last season. Not a bad rate?

meast is only trying to point out what a good ENGLISH prospect we have, but being from huddersfield he will get overlooked by the media because were not a so called top 4 team.

Moving away from the petty comments on here, I have been extremely impressed with McGilveray. It is not just the try scoring that has caught my eye but his carries out of his own half. More often than not he pressures the defence and lands on his front - strong lad. Looks a real prospect.

McGilvary looks like a good young player and a real prospect... another good outside back coming through, great stuff

once again, my point was that a few years ago when penny burst onto the scene the media and especially SKY were all over him showering him with praise and bigging him up as the greatest young player ever, but jerry is doing the same and there is nothing about it in the media, as someone said the fact we aren't a fashionable club could have something to do with it? i wanted posters thoughts on why they think penny deserved more praise and media coverage than jerry not which young player at their club is great etc.

Well for what it is worth, you should relish the fact that the lad is cracking on, under the media radar.

Many a good young'un has been ruined by a massive over hyping and a subsequent fall from grace.

Kevin Penny is an obvious one, but we (at Wigan) have had it happen to plenty. Shaun Ainscough is a more recent example.

I was really impressed with him when I saw him against Quins, not just his try scoring ability but his game awareness, and strength and all round game was solid.
He's looked the best british winger so far this season and would even pick him for the full test team he's that good.

cheers tuggles, i've said the same on our board, is it good for us that because we aren't one of the so called big clubs that jerry is just getting on with it without hemmings,clarke etc wetting themselves or would it spur him on even more knowing he's been talked up

For what its worth, i know he is a cracker. I have had him in my dreamteam from week 1 and I am reaping the rewards.

i do like macgillvray though, i thought he was very good at cardiff, wins the floor and gets his nose through for quick play the balls very very well,

how tall is he, doesn't look huge, whether hes a potential target for high balls, thats what immediately comes to mind

He's like a ball of meat! Reminds me of a younger version of Marcus Bai.

Been watching him closely and he's been devastating in attack. Carrying tacklers backwards time and time again. On this form he should be in the England squad mid-season.
