I agree with Tony 'I'm a pom now' Smith on this one. He might have got a UK passport but it seems that hasn't stopped him talking sense....well on some things.
We all know what Monaghan did.
Time to let sleeping dogs lie.
Abusing Monaghan for what he did is not that unlike the Castleford fans abusing Gareth Thomas for being a homosexual.
So abuse Monaghan at your peril guys...... Your club might cop a big fine. Harlequins despite having no money should be safe because they have no fans... but a side such as Wakefield that at least has some fans...but not much money... could be in real strife if they cop one.

The trouble is that the sport copped a lot of negative flak from the media over the Gareth Thomas v Castleford incident and the way it was handled.
You just KNOW they will be going out of their way to try and get the 'family sport' tag back into the game...and if hundreds of supporters (well 2 or 3 in Harlequins case) start giving it to Monaghan week in week out they will come down hard on the clubs that are involved.

The comparison with what happened to Thomas is just stupid, Monaghan will get some stick and there's nothing Wire or Tony Smith can do about that unless it crosses over the line of acceptable behavour at a game, in which case it will be tried just like all other unacceptable incidents.

[Nothing like it. Insulting someone for being gay is against the rules of the game/ law. Sticking it to and taking the mick out of Monaghan is not illegal or against the rules. A british comedian has already ripped into JM on the BBC I doubt Tony will have the b*lls to challenge them. Tony Smith is one of the most humourless people in the game. I cannot wait to hear the song that get sung when JM plays the likes of saints!

I find the comparisons to Gareth Thomas strange.
Monoghan was essentially sacked from his club, outcast from the NRL and forced to moved to the other side of the world to find employment. I can't see all that happening to someone just because they were homsexual.
I emplore all speccies to bark loudly whenever Joel Monoghan get the ball. He did something stupid and has always said he wants to take responsibility for his actions - part of that is getting grief from the opposition fans.

As for any club getting into trouble, i'd be of the argument that Warrington by employing him are opening the game for disrepute.

Right or wrong verbally abusing a player is a no no...whatever they may or may not have done
As Castleford found out to their cost.
The RFL will be clamping down on this one if it goes too far I'm sure |

Did he actually say that? If so it sounds like the team are mocking him for it and if he can take stick and banter from his own team mates I'm pretty sure he can cope with the abuse from total strangers in the north of England.
All that remains is when Briers puts in a kick he'll shout "fetch, boy!" and Joel will be scoring tries for fun all season. |

Maybe that the first game is the best time to get at him fans from 40 different teams all chanting barking at the same time in the Millenium stadium with the roof on will be worth the entrance fee alone.

You might not have any money to pay the fine...but you havent got any fans to sing anything that might contravene any public order act anyway...so you are pretty safe |

He's going to get Riddicule not abuse ,and not because of his sexual orientation , or his skin colour or any other reason this rule is made for , it is because he was an idiot!. So how will Smith make a case for that ? he should be playing this down not pontificating ,and now he's only gone and made it make it worse for the lad 
We're still amazed at how a 3 try scoring cup hero was suddenly ' Retired ' only to surface at the Eels to make room for him , + the irony of him wearing a shirt with a Dog motif will not be lost on many. |

So... 'riddicule' and abuse are 2 seperate things in your book?
No idea if you have a job.. but just say you did..and one of your colleagues had been filmed doing the same thing as Monaghan...and then every time he came back to work the whole office made 'barking noises' at him.. or started singing 'who let the dogs out' .. or something similar every time they saw him....do you think that would be classed as a form of abuse?
