Watching the game today made me wonder what has happened to these 2 international players because on form neither should be near the England team. Have 2 players ever gone down hill so quickly?
These are players that are still in their 20s and players that should still be performing at the highest level but they just dont look up to it. Some blame their moves to Wigan but I dont think it is as simple as that. Wigan signed Fielden for £450,000 from Bradford and Gleeson for £100,000+ Mathers from Warrington when both players were already going down hill and it was obvious to everyone, apart from the Wigan club and fans, that this was the case. It is certainly safe to say that Bradford and Warrington both got far and away the better deals.
Fielden looks well and truely gone and just isnt the player that he was. If he wasnt a huge signing on a huge wage I doubt he would even be getting in the Wigan team. He seems to have no fire and looks to have lost a lot of weight and strength since his Bradford days when he was the number 1 GB prop. Players like Morley and Peacock have got better and better with age and totally dominate Fielden when they play against him. Looking at him now I cant see him getting back to those days of being an international.
Gleeson has been either poor or awol in his matches for Wigan. Talking to Warrington fans they too say this was the case in his last couple of years there and that along with his attitude is why they wanted rid. They have gone on to better things and Bridge is performing better than Gleeson was there. I think Gleeson has always been overated and has been very lucky to be around when there have been so few GB centres. Indeed there have been quite a few times where Yeaman should have been picked before him. Now there is a lot more competition in the centre spots with the likes of Shenton and Atkins he too may well lose his place for England.
Fielden stopped being any good when Barry MacDermott retired. With Bazza giving him a good smack round the head every so often, he seemes to have gone soft.
I'm not sure if its just wishful thinking but I really do think that Gleeson has a future Internationally
He's a real enigma Gleeson - the most talented centre we have had since Newlove and never really lived up to the promise although he does get bagged more than most when his international appearances haven't been terrible
All things considered, I would invest in youth and develop Shenton in the right centre
