The Club have stated that 2009 is being treated as year 1 in a 3 year campaign to get more people to games. Our older brothers in the Union office are supposedly going to help out once the Union season is over and we now have a new General Manager who is tasked with sorting out the attendance figures. I know of 3 schemes that will be up and running soon that are designed to attract new fans.
That said, in the 7 years I have followed the club, I have banged on about the need to speculate to accumelate.......and the times that money has been spent on marketing we have seen bigger crowds...but the club do not have the funds in place for big time marketing.
The Media (and let's face it, they are all London Lovies educated at Oxbridge) have no interest in covering League. The BBC didn't mention MM on their Saturday morning bulletin, but found time to cover Chess Boxing ([url=http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/magazine/7701980.stmit is a real sport[/url). The evening papers down here are slaves to Wendyball and the SL Show is still sown down here at 4am.......
Next week, the BBC will get 1,000,000 viewers + for the CC games, but by giving the commentary mike to a flat cap sounding and his little welsh mate they simply underline the perception of League as a northern game.
In short, the answer to your question is no....we will not see bigger crowds in TW2 this year, but I believe we will be near the 5,000 average by 2011.
Lastly, we don't average 2,000...it's actually 3,342 so far this season which is still p1ss poor and needs sorting out.

| Harlequins have in the past attracted decent crowds, and I'm sure they will again with the correct promotion and encouragement in and around the London area.
After near on thirty years of spreading the word in the south, I think the club deserves some recognition rather than much of the ridicule they receive from some. The spin off of Harlequins, Bronco's, Crusaders, Fulham has been an introduction of RL into the schools across the region and a decent amature set up along with London Skolars, another team that doesn't get half the recognition it deserves.

Or are they just unrealistic & pointless figures/facts to convince people to to keep 'Quins in SL?
I'm sure they will have focused on attracting support since 1996, but it hasn't happened.
I don't think it ever will.

The Club have an issue with marketing and promotion........in that these things cost Money and we are not rolling in it at present. 5,000 is a target figure that I believe we will achieve by 2011 but it will involve a giant leap of faith when it comes to funding. Too many times the club have wasted cash that even a 5yr old would have used better and therefore, the people who hold the purse strings are reluctant to spend money on anything other than development and the community. This is all well and good, but we are not seeing the youngsters who play the game coming to the Stoop.
We got 8,000 to the Wigan Game last year.......and not even half that this year....the reason why? we have stopped giving tickets away. The 8,000 crowd was made up of 2,000 Wiganners, 3,000 Quins fans and 3,000 community freebies..........

what does that say for projected attendance figures?
if you can't get people who play and therefore have an interest in the game to turn up with free tickets, how can you expect large numbers of people to pay to watch the club?

| It all starts at the back office. A chairman with a vision, a CEO with great management skills and a PR manger with imagination and drive. Oh and a rich board member and a public that is semi interested doesn't go amiss!
Personally I'd like to see the RFL give London and CC 500 grand a year each just to promote themselves. They face a massive task raising public interest and as RL is still but a blip on the English sporting scene they need alot more help. Either that or stop the farce and admit we can't afford to expand the game at a SL level into non RL areas. For a top flight team to be getting crowds of 3,000 is an embarrasement to the code imo.

It doesn't help that past regimes did all the could to p**soff the people in the amateur game, bridges take time to mend.

Square peg in a round hole scenario.
There are 3 key markets that the club needs to target.
1. Local community. The borough of Richmond and Twickenham has a population of 250,000. These people need to be invited down for a game. I don't care if it's free tickets or a special offer, but we need to get people to a game so they can make up their own minds about RL.
2. ANZACS. Most of the people I spoke to at the Manly game had no idea we existed until TNT ran the promotion for that game. As much as they can be annoying little bu99ers, I would settle for 1,000 of them at each game.
3.Ex-pat northeners. A lot of the people I know through Quins RL are northeners by birth, but who live in the London area. You will often see them in their old Bradford Northern/Wire/St Helens/Wigan shirts supporting Quins. It is estimated that there are 600,000 northeners living in the London area. If 1% of these people came to our games we'd be running an 9,000 average straight away.
There is a final point. The Club need to sort out the pricing of tickets and the ticketing arrangements. A lot of Season Ticket holders are concerned that they are being short changed and anyone who brings a mate to a game is forced to sit in seats that are situated at the end of the stand.
We have about 2,750 hard core fans and the club can't afford to start losing them.

good to see a quins fan thinking ahead and engaging in sensible debate.

It's money though, no one is prepared to risk money to build attendances, there is only so much you can do on the cheap, if you follow Gutterfax on the Quins board you'll see he is a marketing guru, he's set out that it isn't a huge gamble to put money into this but so far no one listens.

| It's a shame, because they are starting to produce local, professional Rugby League players but nobody in London seems to be bothered.
Maybe these guys are the marketing tools to linking the people of London with the game?

You are me and I claim my £5.
I have banged on for years about getting the "players" out and about doing visits to local pubs with a couple of our cheerleaders in tow....selling advance tickets etc....but Oh No....the Club Know better.
I get very very p155ed off when the club ignore what are cost effective routes to market. They read these boards (I have been asked to tone down my marketing rants), but they pay no attention.
They are planning things to boost gates, but having no cash and being reliant on the Union office staff is not ideal.
