What constitutes a “proper name”, that it’s old? People say they’re glad they don’t have an animal name.As an atheist I’m glad and wouldn’t be interested in having a name that came from the church and having a stylised flower for a crest.'"
Wakefield Trinity was founded by a group of men from the Holy Trinity Church so its an apt name still to use, the Crest of the fleur de lis is the crest from the city of Wakefield again apt to use, where's leeds zoo then

It was an apt name to use in the 1870’s....is it still apt in the year 2019? Sports, times, move on. When naming clubs in the 1800’s they won’t have been any thought of marketing, branding and identity like their is today, so saying clubs should stick with what was picked around 150 years is ridiculously stuck in the past.
Why does your badge have to be the city crest? Why not create your own identity?

Heritage? Pride?
What thought has gone into the naming of Leeds Rhinos? How do they market the brand/team any different to any other club? They don’t.

Leeds have got heritage, they’ve got pride. Adapting and moving with the times doesn’t change that. The idea that you can only have those things if you stick with the exact same name decided over a century ago by people who wouldn’t have any idea about 21st century marketing, branding and identity is dumb,
What thought has gone into Leeds Rhinos? More than what’s gone into Trinity. Yours is basically “guys decided on this name 140 years or so ago so WE HAVE to stick with it”. Zero thought about TODAY’S modern sporting landscape, just appeasing 50+ year old guys who want things to be like what it was like when they first started watching as kids......and they’re the same ones who then mock other clubs for targeting kids.
So whilst Rhinos didn’t have a pre existing connection with the city, that only makes it more impressive that Leeds as a club have created a connection with that name and the city rather than take a pre existing connection decided by people back in the 1800’s and sticking with it now because you’re not creative and forward thinking enough as a club to move with the times and have to rely on the past.

Stupid club monikers that’s what.
They are cheap and meaningless and imo add nothing.
All the clubs who don’t have silly animal names and badges look so much classier.
HKR
Hull FC
Wakefield Trinity
St Helens (who had far to much class to ever entertain the idea in the first place)
All sound better and all have better logos and thus a far more professional look.
Of course some of the animal branded teams work better than others. Castleford Tigers and Warrington Wolves have a certain ring to them.
I accept there is a certain history to Salford Red Devil’s though frankly I feel it’s probably to late to really reclaim it.
The rest are cheap, meaningless and tbh these days not even effective - people have moved on from daft tat like that and can see straight through it.
Giants and Dragons and Broncos are all plain embarrassing. However the two worst one are Leeds Rhinos (what the hell have Leeds got to do with Rhinos) and Wigan Warriors, a seriously unimaginative steal from NZ.
Leeds and Wigan are two of our three premier clubs, hugely recognisiable in there own right. Leeds as a major city is worth its weight in gold it doesn’t need a silly name tagging on, pLeeds RL was just fine.
As for Wigan, Wigan are by far our most famous and recognised club and as such need no embellishment. What’s worse is they only seem to use the Warrior tag half heartedly, which makes it even worse.
I’m sure the amazing number of marketing experts who seem to inhabit the VT will tell me what a great marketing tool they are. Well maybe once at the inception of SL but now they just look tired and jokey so I don’t buy that argument.
When Wakefield reverted to Trinity I know Carter was very nervous and only did it due to fans demands. He’s never regretted it since as Trinity merchandise flies off the shelf in a way Wildcats stuff never did. Although some of that is due to the teams improved performances the bulk is not.
Almost anyone above the age of 20 prefers tradition to silly cartoon names and badges. If Leeds dropped the Rhino motif I don’t think they would lose a penny, in fact I recon they would only gain. Whilst the prestige of just being Leeds RL would be worth even more.
Get rid, grow up and show some pride in the past and some faith in the future. We are a traditional and prestigious sport, we don’t need it anymore, as with imagination we can and should make our past work for us.'"
Tend to agree. I much preferred when we were the “Loiners” more apt!

You really are the sort of bloke who could start an argument in an empty room. I mean obviously I like a ruck but you just argue for the sake of it, egged on of course by your little band of paranoid loaners.
However even for you this post is especially ludicrous. Of course Trinity is apt it’s our frigging name!
What are you saying? Should Man U drop the United from there name because it’s no longer apt because they haven’t United with anyone in over a hundred years?
Coca Cola have had the same name for over a century but seem to have no trouble marketing it - what the hell has time moving on got to do with anything?
You’re so desperate to be a smart and prove yourself right on everything that you don’t even check that your post even make sense let alone if their right or wrong.
Just admit it, regardless of whether the Rhino tag is right or wrong Trinity have got it spot on for them - go on try it you’ll feel a lot better.

If you visit leeds' website, you'll see prominence given to the recently-formed Leeds Rhinos netball team. This sport is currently experiencing a boom in participation and in national TV coverage, some of it FTA. Now it may be that the club gains more through getting more people playing sport (grants and the like) than it does from running the team itself but none the less it'll likely provide an effective means of promoting the Rhinos brand. More than womens' RL in fact, which increases participation but doesn't feature on TV too much.
Just one example of how the club IS marketing the brand differently to any other club.
Being old-fashioned, Leeds RL is still how I refer to the club, often as not, and Wakefield Trinity sounds just fine.

Sorry Printer.
I was with you till that post.
You've already said the Trinity name is marketable.
It's history of the club that people want to keep. It's the name of the team that dominated in the 60s. It's the team Jonty Parkin, David Topliss and Wally Lewis played for. Neil Fox scored at Wembley in a shirt with a fleur de lis on the badge.
It came from the church but so did Christmas and I'm sure you still have a mince pie.
In the same way Leeds have made the Rhino mean something in modern times, Trinity already meant something to us and is a well established brand.. No need to change just because its old because it still works.
Some teams like Sts and Rovers have the same. Leeds didn't so created a new one. Bradford didn't feel theirs was marketable so changed it.
As long as its marketable and loved by the fans (customers) it is perfect.

| I would suggest the success of Leeds and Bradford has had far more effect of growing the club and reaching out to people than an animal name.
Had they both always been xxxx no amount of Rhinos or Bulls paraphernalia would've made a blind bit of difference, equally so, they would still be big clubs now (relatively) if they still went by their original names and had the recent success they have had.

Although I'm not a huge fan of the Wolves moniker I'll always be a Wire I can see why the club continues with it appealing to a younger audience, the mascot, the merchandise and in our case we have rolled Wolves out to a club affiliated Volleyball Team covering all ages and genders so it's not something that I can be offended by and in our case we don't really use it on the terraces other than asking said mascot to reveal a message on his underpants.
Each to their own and I believe Salford were Red Devils before United

Just providing another side to the debate. Been plenty of criticism and mocking of Leeds and Bradford etc. so why can’t we have a closer look at the others and question them and their suitably? Your right I did say Trinity is marketable now, but nothing wrong with questioning why? In case it appeals to the older generation, why is that any better than appealing to the younger generation?
I can reply to you because you can have a proper debate, Vastman no point, he has clearly snapped at the first questioning of his club whilst hypocritically forgetting how many times he and a few others have ridiculed and mocked Rhinos, Bulls, Wolves and Co. during this thread. I’ve not written anything worst than they have about other clubs.

I understand.
I have beef with Rhinos (apart from the rugby). They picked a nickname that I don't think was used in major sport anywhere else and made it work.
Peter Deakin at Bulls learned his trade in America and visited Chicago Bulls. He took the idea and sprinted with it. Both went for a new audience and got them.
Wakefield with less money to market and less success to bond to did a half decent job with Wildcats. I saw plenty of kids go wild for the mascot before they even noticed the game.
It was pushed out mainly because the brand was associated with the financial mismanagement and the Trinity name still retained a lot of integrity in the city.
I prefer wearing a leasure shirt with the Trinity logo than the Wildcat one and I bwonder if we sell less kids ones now. But more adults......that's more money so not a bad thing. .

I think we'd still have sold more gear because Wildcats was such a lame moniker. Had it been Wakefield Rhinos instead, a rebrand to Trinity would still have been just as popular too. As others have said, if it works for the club then that's what's right for the club.

I think it was a case of “speculate to accumulate “ the rebrand undoubtedly created more funds to build a better quality playing squad.

You really should have some idea what you are talking about before putting it to print, if you said United decided to use our nickname which proved to be very successful for them you would have been correct.

That's interesting. I didn't know that.
Lot of potential in Salford if it can be harnessed.

Gates?
I’m not sure of their crowds when they played in Manchester when they were first formed (they started out in Hulme and then Moss Side) but when they moved to the Willows they used to get 15-20000 and then 20000+ at times in the 1930s. Just after the French press gave them their nickname of “les diables rouge” they got a crowd of 26470 against Wire.
Even a Salford schools’ final in 1932 got a crowd of 10000.

| Salford were always the red devils as far as I can remember.
I thought they cut "devils" during that period of sooper dooper nfl/baseball/basketball re-branding, I dunno.
Not everything transposed from those sports looks as crass, the marketing of the event, corporate and event entertainment and the general hyperbole introduce was a decent refresh of an old format.
But once you start messing with a hundred years of club identity, it riles people up, not surprising really.
It was when it was introduced, and its now.
Not picking on Leeds particularly but I guess there'll be paying fans now that have never known them as anything other than the Rhinos, which I think is a shame, and I kinda wonder how they'd feel about dropping it after 20 years.
If not dropping it then at least putting something on there that ties them to 130 years of history playing Rugby in Leeds.
Leeds Rhinos sounds like they were formed yesterday and that it could be something else tomorrow, it gives no hint of their stature or level of participation in creating our sport over the years.
